Marathons are like childbirth!

Monday, October 06, 2008

So, I ran the Portland Marathon yesterday. As I was waddling around after the race, the only thing I could compare the experience to is childbirth. I could get really detailed here.... but seriously... there are a lot of similarities... like at mile 24 when I'm so close to being done but in pain... time slowed down and thoughts like "this is why so many people only run one marathon" start to come in. Then at the end, I accomplished a goal, I got a little prize, and my endorphins kicked in making me forget about the last 21-26.2 miles... just like childbirth! Of course holding your newborn does not really compare to getting a race t shirt, and another difference, as the doctor who delivered my first baby said, is that "You don't get a medal for delivering a baby without pain medication." I DID get one for finishing a marathon!

Yay, Brightbow!!!!! I knew you could--WOULD--do it! That's great! And I can imagine how it would be the same...I guess I'll be able to compare it once again at the end of April! :) Hope things are well!

So when is the next marathon? ;)

Yay! Congrats on your marathon finish!

So, do you have thoughts of "this is why so many people only run one marathon" or are you thinking about how you can improve for your next marathon. :-)

    Enjoy your post-marathon recovery!

Wonderful! What an achievement! Thanks for sharing. You should take a picture with you and your medal and post it on Sparkpeople. That's an experience I'm sure you will never forget!

It sounds like you may go for another marathon?

Congrats!!! You must be feeling pretty sore today, but pretty proud as well. Wear that medal with pride :)

Love your comparisons! I've often thought the same thing when I'm out there on a 20 mile run. I can only imagine how much more painful it's going to be when I run the actual marathon.
