Been having too much fun to blog

Thursday, October 30, 2008

First of all, many thanks to all the folks who have commented on my page and my blogs. I do read them all even though I have gotten lax about responding to them individually. I just realized it has been almost a year since I entered any kind of blog entry. I've still been very active in keeping up with my fitness routine and my eating plan, just haven't written about it.

My biggest remaining challenge has been this erratic metabolism of mine. It frustrates me a lot, more than it should, so I am making a conscious effort not to be so focuessed on it. If I just stick with my current habits, I will stay within an 8 pound range. I have been up and down between 129 and 137 for the last year. I have gotten really fustrated when the math (calories in vs calories ou)t doesn't work for me to keep my weight stable but my variable metabolic rate just makes it jump around even when mathmatically it shouldn't. I'm just going to have to learn to trust that even with that anomoly, it will even out eventually and keep me within that 8 pound range, so I need to stop freaking out when I gain or lose a couple of pounds.

My 61st birthday is coming up (Nov 9). I feel great, in fact way better than I did on my 51st and even 41st birthday. I've actually always looked forward to getting old. All the years I spent building a career, raising a family, and saving for retirement have allowed me to be where I am today.....four grown children on their own, I work if and when I want to, and I have the time, energy, and resouces to do the things I've always wanted to with a whole lot less of the obligations and responsibilites that always made me back burner my wants when I was younger. I am literally having the time of my life.

Last year our big activity was our trip to Scotland. This year our traveling has been closer to home and we focussed more on some home improvements, putting in hardword flooring throughout the house, replacing some major appliances (including the a/c system), and getting an HD TV, wireless networking, and a laptop for me. I've also finally gotten a wardrobe that really fits for the first time in a lot of years. I'm not really much of a clothes horse and my wardrobe is small, but everything actually fits for a change.

I've also taken up a couple of new hobbies. One is becoming a writer/teacher/consultant in health and wellness. I call this a hobby rather than a job because I do it not for the money, but because I love it and it is my way of giving back for all I have gotten in the last few years. I have been teaching a nutrition and cooking classes for the county that emphasizes that feeding your family well doesn't need to be any more time consuming or expensive than feeding them junk food. I am also always developing recipes for nutrient dense foods and am enjoying cooking and even canning foods. I'm also doing personal training and weight management counselling out of a local studio where I also teach some Pilates and Yoga classes. It was there that I discovered Zumba, sort of a Latin version of line dancing. I've only been taking Zumba classes for a couple of months, but it is so much fun I may eventually train to teach Zumba as well.

Between writing and teaching and all of the home improvement projects over the summer, I am now really enjoying having more time to get back to the fitness activities I personally enjoy. I got a new bike for Christmas last year and love riding around the neighborhood and running errands. I'm still doing some running, but didn't much over the summer, so have to get myself back into better running form again. I also got a Fluidity Bar (it's sorta like a combination portable barre with attached resistance bands and floor mat). I rearranged some things when we had the floors redone so now I have it where I can leave it out and use it on a daily basis for strength, balance, and flexibility training. And I still use my trusty stationary bike which is the first exercise I started doing regularly shortly after I first joined SP almost 3 years and 150 pounds ago.

So that pretty much brings me up to date blog wise and I will try to be a bit more consistant with updates.

Nancy, you are doing wonderful! I'm glad you are enjoying life and still able to keep stable with your weight by eating right and exercising. I have enjoyed the year with a lot of travel and being with friends and family but have done a poor job of eating and literally no exercise so consequently have gained about 35 pounds. I must get back on track in 2009 and I will. See you soon. Love, Rosy

CONGRATULATIONS and what an AWESOME journey you have traveled and continue to travel. It sounds like you are a very busy person...but what fun you seem to be having. You make even the work sound like fun. I just started the zumba and love it. It is difficult for me but I continue doing the best I can.
God bless you and thank you for sharing.
