Fitting it in... the toddler challenge

Thursday, December 04, 2008

How do you find time to exercise with kids?

That's such a great question. So many people do creative things to fit their exercise into their families schedule. There's no 'one size fits all' answer.

One thing that I think all of us who are moms and regular exercisers can attest to is that exercise is a top priority for the day.

For us I try to get up early. This is a joke, because as soon as I get up my daughters wake up. It's like they have little "mommy's awake" sensors or something. So when I exercise it's with them. I take them in the jogger, they play on the floor while I run on the treadmill or while I lift weights. (I call it the toddler challenge. It is a challenge to lift weights safely with kids hanging around!)

If we were able to join a gym right now, I'd totally go for that option. The childcare area at the local gym is excellent, so I could take them along and they'd have fun too. Or I'd get up earlier and go when they open and leave the kids with their dad, sound asleep.

Anyway, do whatever it takes to fit it in. I was just telling my husband yesterday that I have 100% MORE patience if I take time to run in the morning. It's miraculous. ;)

So far the only thing I can do is lift weights and go for walks. Of course I do chase her around, play horsey, and housework counts for something but I am looking for a routine that is safe for little ones. My girl is almost 2 and a half and she hangs on my every move. I like that you called exercise the toddler challenge because thats exactly how it feels and every small victory is so much more challenging with her. Any ideas of other ways to safely exercise with her? Tried Just Dance 2 for the Wii and wound up popping her in the head with the remote, so thats definatley out!

I really applaud you - I feel like it's hard to find time and I don't have kids yet! Great job for finding the time and for trying to get them involved!!

great blog. i have the luxury of only working 3 days a week but that means i am a sahm 4 days a week. it is honestly easier sometimes to get in exercise on days i work. ds is three and he is great. he is my number one encourager to run and work out. he likes to do work out movies with me, go for jogs in the stroller and in the bike trailer. i wish i had more time to exercise alone. since ds started preschool 2 mornings a week for a couple of hours i have that time to exercise for sure. i will say in my house exercise is a priority over a perfectly clean house. my son has those early morning sensors too.
