I am learning to fly again! :D

Saturday, July 04, 2009

Since last week I have been learning to paraglide again. Even though I took a 6 weeks break, I'm doing really well and my instructor says I'm not far from my first high altitude jump.

I'm even getting some great exercise. Learning this involves walking 10 minutes up a steep hill, carrying 15 kg of equipment, then running/pulling the paraglider up above your head and flying down, landing and walking back up...and I usually do about 4-5 repetitions in a day, before the weather changes and it becomes impossible to fly there. It's very strenuous, but you don't even notice because of the adrenaline rushing through your body. :)

I am slowly getting addicted to this LOL. It's such an amazing feeling to be up in the air and to be able to control where you're going. I was worried about being afraid of height, but so far it hasn't been a problem at all.

Oh gosh, it's been a year since I wrote this. Unfortunately I had to stop training when I became pregnant, the risk of impact is too great in someone inexperienced.

I miss it though. On Sunday Rene and I are going on a vacation to a place in the Slovene mountains where he'll be able to praglide. I'll be stuck on the ground with Bor and Unai. :/ Not that I mind their company, but I really wish I could be going too.

As it is, I'm not sure when I'll take it up again. I hope I'll still have to courage to do it in a couple of years. It's not a dangerous sport according to statistics, but still, the possibilities of hurting yourself are there. One of my training mates didn't do a good take-off, he sat down in his seat too early and crashed into the ground, breaking his shoulder and sustaining a concussion. He's fine, but he was incapacitated for several months. Not something I want to risk with an infant/toddler.

Maybe I'll take a tandem flight instead. That way, an experienced pilot will be controlling the situation and I'll be able to just enjoy.
Jess, that is definitely an option if/when you come to visit. Just remember to make it summer and longer than 2 weeks, cause this really depends on the weather. :)

Sounds great! I'm glad you found a new activity to enjoy!
Maybe you can take me out to try that when I finally come visit you!
