We went camping and ended up on the news.....

Saturday, July 11, 2009

Ok so I am posting a lot of different blogs tonight… to explain, I snuck my computer on the trip and so I am typing each this post while camping so I can copy and paste it into my blog when I get back. Each post is a different typing session and if I had internet access would have been posted at the time I typed them. I know I could put them all together but I’m trying not to make them too long.

Moving forward…..

Day One - Tuesday

So Tuesday, I get home from work and it takes the entire day to pack the car…. No, I’m not exaggerating. It literally took my and my oldest daughter 4.5 hours to load and figure out how to tie down our car top carrier, plus pack the stuff that went in it. Usually when we travel Jen loads it because we leave out right after I get off work in the morning, but this time we switched roles…. Never again! Then it was on to packing everything else, pre-cooking some of the food and 2 trips to Wal-Mart for stuff we forgot about…… I finally got to bed about 9:30pm (I was up 25.5 hours…ugh).

Day Two

Wednesday morning, I woke up really early(5:30am) and couldn’t fall back to sleep, so I got up and finally packed my clothes for the trip and started gathering other odds and ends and one more trip to Wal-Mart…. Then finally, at 9:10am, were ready to leave! A lot of that was not me…. My kids were moving very slow and Jen got home at 7:45 from work and had to shower and all that. Honestly, I don’t think we would have left then, but we were stopping at my doctor appointment on the way out of town and the appointment was at 9:30am…. I’ll write about it in another post though.

10:30 we’re on the road….NOT! We are headed out of town but Jen realized she had no coffee or way to make coffee so one more stop at Wal-Mart! Buy time we’re done there it’s almost 11:30 and everyone wants lunch…. Oh boy now it begins….. We have Mc Donald’s, Hardees and some Chinese place to chose from… no good picks (I can do subway or even taco bell since I’m familiar with the nutrition spread and make really good choices) so I let them pick. Hardees it is – now I’ve been craving Hardees for the past 1.5 months and I’m telling everyone not to let me order anything but a salad as we pull in…. Do you think they listen to me? Heck no, they are worse than my own brain at making excuses for me to do the unhealthy. I end up with a Frisco burger, onion rings, and Mt. Dew.

I learned something….. I couldn’t eat more than three bites of the burger… I literally almost got sick from the taste of all the grease; it was saturated and dripping; just the thought now makes my stomach turn. After staying away from that crap for so long, I can’t handle it. I don’t believe I used to eat that all the time. Ok, I’m not perfect, I ate all the onion rings, they weren’t as greasy, or at least weren’t dripping grease everywhere and I did drink about a quarter of my med. Mt. Dew.

Finally, we were on our way. Now Map Quest did really good with the directions…. We were almost there and it has us turn down some gravel/dirt road and then says to turn again in three miles…. Well that turn in three miles had this big sign about it being an unmaintained road or something like that, went down and steep hill and looked really muddy at the bottom….. I turned around instead and drove to town and asked for directions….. This kept us on a paved road.

We get there and get a lot set up and Channel 9 shows up, looking to interview a family. We end up being part of a news story for that night. www.kcrg.com/news

The rest of the night was slow… we walked around a while, roasted dogs, got reacquainted with camping….. And froze; for a summer night it was really cool.

First off, I love your blogs! Read the marshmallow one to my 16 yr old son. He laughed and laughed after first declaring its the kind of thing to happen to our family but hasn't so far!

We've camped in Iowa but never at that park. Looked like a good place to camp in the TV clip! Glad you enjoyed yourselves despite the added excitement! emoticon

Sounds like quite the ordeal! Argh, I wish I had that reaction when eating junk food. But no, I have never been one of those people who are made physiologically sick by bad food choices (afterward, but that is a mental thing!). Maybe it is just taking my stomach a lot longer to get the message than the rest of me...
