Sugars?!

Monday, February 22, 2010

So I've decided to start looking at my sugar intake. Very few of these online nutrition-tracking sites include sugar as one of their nutrition facts, which is pretty sad! Sugar can play such a huge role in how our body handles things.

Oh, well. I'll do it myself.

1st day (as of 3:00PM): ~42g or 2.9 tbsp*
* EDIT - I decided to not count the fruit leathers, as their ingredients are literally just fruit puree

The recommended daily intake is 12 teaspoons, or 40 grams. However, that seems to only apply to refined/processed sugar, which excludes fruits and sugar cane.

That sugar cane thing is where I'm getting held up... I try to buy things organic/all-natural where I can, and what they often do is replace all the horrid HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) with natural sugar cane juice.

So I think I'm going to include sugar cane in my calculations, if only in the interest of eliminating ADDED sugars - AKA, anything not from a raw fruit.

The hardest part is calculating the right amount of sugar grams based on how much was eaten, though (like if they list the serving in grams, and I entered it in cups). Online converters are a lifesaver!

That's the nice thing about food - if it's not raw, it's a specific brand. I just Googled all the brand names that I ate, pretty much all of them post their nutritional value online these days. :-)
