Any ideas for "fun" exercise?

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

What do all of you do with your teenagers that is physical activity and fun?? My daughter and I usually go out to dinner and then to a movie... this always involves a huge bucket of buttery popcorn.

I want to change this and I am looking for low cost ideas to spend time with her and get healthy. Keep in mind currently we live in Wisconsin and it's cold!!

Any ideas?? emoticon

    Hey Jennifer,

My daughter and I did a couch to 5K and trained for a half marathon together. It was so good for both of us! We raised money for a charity and spent a lot of time together fund raising and walking/running together. I really cherish the memories now that she has been gone for 6 months as an exchange student in Thailand. It is getting warmer out and honestly if you layer you will find that you are too hot! Prevention magazine has half marathon training programs that are almost free...or you could train with a charity that you would like to support. It is really nice to spend the time together before they fly the nest. I did have to bribe mine with an I Pod..have fun!

I have to say my main form of exercise with the girls is Dance, Dance Revolution Extreme on Playstation2. We set it to do either 30 minutes or 400 calories and just dance (well I think it is stepping and jumping) until I drop. They never drop! I DDR with my girls 11, 14 and when she is home from school the 21 year old even. I have begun to love it along with WII Active custom workouts. I'm a computer geek and I don't like winter sports so it is something fun we do together. A lot of grownups act shy about it but I've DDR'd with a few grown girlfriends once they stop being self-conscious! I don't mind being totally stupid silly. What can I say? It beats the treadmill!

I just read the low cost - the Wii stuff is pricier but I don't like that as much as DDR. You can get a used playstation2 from Gamestop and a used game. That's what I did to keep the price low!

Even if it isn't physical activity- get away from sitting and eating popcorn- maybe walking the mall and shopping...
How about taking a class together- yoga, Zumba? Or making cards? Scrapbooking? Playing Games? Working in a nursing home?
It is hard when it's cold out!
Good luck! Great that you are looking for aletrnatives!

Ok you have a problem I have not faced. Mine sons are grown. But what about mall walking, I mean window shopping and walking is all good. Roller skating or ice skating. I know this will get easier once the weather warms up for you.
Hoping other mothers with teens will have even better suggestions.
