What I've learned from my friend Jan.

My friend Jan is riding her bike across the country. She's keeping a journal, which I've been following. Not only is she a great writer, but she's an inspirational one. Each day she records where she's been, who she's met, and how she feels. Her appreciation for the little things in life is helping me to notice the little things in my life.
Yesterday I was taking my lunch time walk. It was a beautiful day, but I was dragging and feeling sorry for myself. I was fat, old, tired and sore. Oh poor me. Then I saw him. I followed him for a little while, and tried to speed up. He slowed down a bit, and then I got lucky. He stopped for a quick break and I caught up to him. He was 11 weeks old, soft, brown and he liked me. Yes, his name was Meeker and he was a chocolate lab puppy. For me there is nothing more wonderful in the world than a puppy. His owners let me pet him and the encounter lifted my mood. I thought of Jan and how she appreciates everything and everyone she comes in contact with. So after I pried myself away from Meeker, I quit feeling sorry for myself, picked up my pace and enjoyed the rest of the walk.
So, if you're in need of a litte inspiration, check out Jan's journal, The Road to California at
or find a warm puppy.
