Need input on getting a second dog - quickly!!

Friday, April 09, 2010

So...I have Kahlua, a 78lb, 14 mo old Bernese Mountain dog. She is a great dog, still VERY puppy though, and really high energy for the breed. She loves other dogs so much and was so excited when the neighbor dog came to visit. I really want to get her a sibling. I found the cutest little 8 wk old puppy at the shelter and put in an application, they're holding her for me until Sunday unless I give her up before then. Also available is Kahlua's grandmother (from the breeder) who is 7 yrs old and for the breed very senior (avg life expectancy is 7-9 yrs for the breed)

I was all gung ho for the baby puppy until the reality of puppyhood (beyond housebreaking and general manner training) started kicking in this morning. I live alone and don't have anyone to help me w/ the puppy, and at 8 weeks old, she's too young, too small to keep up (and unvaccinated) to go for walks around the neighborhood so what do I do with her while I walk Kahlua? Baby puppy needs to go potty too...Yes I know I could do it, I could make it work, but I'm not sure I'm really up for the task right now.

On the flip side, Granny Girl may outlive expectations, but most likely won't be around too long. But she's already big enough to play w/ Kahlua, go for walks, etc. She's already pottytrained and house mannered in general, she'll likely still need obenience training though as show dogs typically aren't well versed in basic obedience since a different skill set is required for the show ring. Also Granny Girl may help Kahlua calm down some and she may learn to be more gentle (I'm grasping I know LOL).

Anyone willing to give me their vote for which way they would go? I think I'm leaning towards granny girl, I can always get a baby puppy in 40 yrs when I retire....uggg 40 yrs...

    My vote goes to granny

but - have you thought of fostering a puppy/young dog - for a week or two when you have more time? I know at times here the Humane Society is looking for temporary pet fosterers due to an overflow

Definitely Granny Girl - have fun with your babies. Puppies are way too high maintenance.

I love the idea of adopting Granny Girl! She finds a good home AND your dog gets a new playmate. The training won't be nearly as much work as a puppy would be....but I'm a big fan of adult dog adoption, so I'm a little partial to the older folks!

It sounds like for now, the best option would be the older dog.
