My DVD Challenge - WATP Ultimate 1 Mile

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

I'm on a journey through my rarely used fitness DVD's, and today is Day 2. I'm doing each DVD and blogging about them so I can figure out what I have and make use of them.

Today’s DVD is Leslie Sansone’s Walk Away the Pounds Ultimate Collection 1 Mile Get Up and Get Started. Whew! That is a long name. This DVD was produced in association with Gaiam. It is one DVD with 4 workouts: 1 through 4 miles. It also came with a stretchy band, but that was not used today.

I’m really not sure when or where I got this DVD. There was a point in time that I lost my original 1 Mile WATP DVD in this messy house. I might have bought this one so I would have a 1 mile walk. I had a phase of doing WATP DVD's in the morning before work. I never really progressed past the one mile stage with Leslie.

For some reason, this 1 mile walk uses the one pound hand weights that don’t come with this set. Luckily, I have these weights that came with one of my other WATP DVD’s, so I was good to go. Here’s a photo of these little ball things with my DVD collection below them. You can also see the red stretchy band, still in its package.

The balls fit well in my hands and don’t bother my arthritic wrists too much. I have to concentrate on not trying to squeeze them. They are hard – not squishy at all. They don’t bounce when you drop them – just guess how I know that! My grip is a problem due to arthritis, but this is not too bad.

Let me start out by saying that I love Leslie Sansone and I love the whole WATP theory. I like that I can do a mile workout in less than 20 minutes in a small floor space and with no one looking at me. I especially love the repetition. I like that she always starts out with walking, side steps, kicks and knee lifts. It’s very comforting.

I like that she always has her group of friends with her that she talks to and encourages. I love her commentary as we go through the workout though I know some people are annoyed by her. I just love how bubbly and upbeat she is. You can see clips on You Tube if you are not familiar with Leslie and her workouts.

Generally, I can do Leslie’s 1 mile workouts, but I have never progressed beyond that. Maybe this DVD review project will change that!

This 1 mile walk is somewhat challenging for me. For about a quarter of it you hold the balls and do some lifts with them. I’m not sure how I feel about these balls. One the one hand they are only 1 pound each and you are only using them for around 6 minutes. On the other hand, I’ve read that wrist and ankle weights are not a good idea when working out.

The walk was really good and kind of taxing for me since there was a lot of arm movement, with and without the weights. I did this workout at about 3 this afternoon. I was tired and could have taken a nap. I am really glad I did the DVD instead. It definitely perked me up enough to get to the farmer’s market, which was a badly needed trip for me.

This one’s a keeper, but I’m leery about the longer workouts. The 4 mile will be 80 minutes, I think. That would be a lot for me at the pace she goes. We shall see. Maybe I will be in better shape by the time I get to this point again. I think I have about two weeks worth of DVD's before I have to start over.

I'm motivated and looking forward to tomorrow's DVD.

You know what.. her original WATP with the balls were always somewhat hard for me.. something about the sequence. When I first started exercising, I got to 2 miles and quit. When I went back over 2 years later, I was able to go right back to 2 miles and eventually got to 4 miles. Its sort of strange, but 3 and 4 were about the same .. the hardest was getting from 1 to 2 and then beyond 2... but you will do it! I think Leslie has one of the few DVD workouts that really is do-able for those with lots to lose.

I will say, once I got to 3 miles, I got Debra Mazda's DVDs and I LOVE them. If you can do 2 miles of Leslie, you can do Debra's Shapely Girl workouts and she has some great moves like boxing and something she calls 'football' that made me feel very powerful... one to rent in the future! You can also sort of custom mix her workouts and do from 19 minutes to 50 minutes so that is kind of great.

This is a super idea! Thank you so much for reviewing your DVDs here. It's inspiring to consider doing the same. I have dvds I've never even watched, let alone worked out with. This is a rough week for me but I hope to get back on the Spark track next week. In the meantime, I shall enjoy reading your reviews!

I love Leslie! I just tried a new one this morning. Keep doing those single miles then add on slowly, you can do it.

What a great idea...I have a few DVDs that I used to do, and now that we have Netflix instant streaming and Free On Demand Excercises (oh, and summer doesn't help either!), I don't use them as much!

I love Leslie! I use the 4 mile fast walk. It is a 60 minute video and really gets your heart pumping. I have used her 1, 2, and walk and kick videos and have enjoyed them all. Keep up the DVD challenge!
