Last night was my 3rd 5K ever. I've been training with Couch to 5K for 3-4 months and had been doing 30-35 min runs 2-3 times a week the past couple of weeks. I knew I had to be getting somewhat faster, but not much--I'm just not built for speed.
Overall it was a great run. I ran with my sister and last year we crossed the finish line together. This year she had started C to 5K a few months after me and had one 5K under her belt already. She is a bit faster than me, partly due to her 6" she has on me--her stride is much longer! I was able to keep up with her for the first mile, then just tried to keep her in site the rest of the way.
The course is relatively flat, with one bigger hill before the downhill finish stretch. Around mile 2 or so I was tempted to walk, but I knew I had been training to run non-stop and just kept going. Listening to music on my ipod and singing along in my head helps to keep me going. Once again our family was near the finish line to cheer us on, so that was fun. I gave my oldest a high five and my husband told me to just sprint it out.
I finished in 31:21, a new PR. Last year we ran 34:04 and an 11 min mile. This year was just about a 10 min mile, so I shaved 1 min off my mile and almost 3 min off my 5K time. Woo hoo!!
Now I need to keep running and find a few more 5K's. You know you've changed your running mentality when you get up at 6am to run 2-3 times a week. ;)
