Sgt. Hartman is put on hold…

If you’ve kept up with my blog, you’ll know that I started working with a personal trainer recently & though I complained in my last two blog entries, I really did enjoy it. I had friends surrounding me, encouraging me to continue on & even the trainer, evil as he may be, helped boost my motivation to continue my sessions.

A few months ago, I fell down a flight of stairs (really, you don’t want to know!) Upon initial exam, the emergency doctor thought that I had torn ligaments in my leg. After going to therapy for about four weeks, I had a follow up appointment with my regular doctor. I explained that the therapy hasn’t made a difference & my leg is still swollen, sore and not healed a bit. On the mere chance that we missed something on the initial exam, he sent me back for x-rays again. Sure enough, the fibula is broken in two. Well, no WONDER it hadn’t healed!!! I’ve been walking on it, exercising, doing ‘boot camp’ and some quantitative squats!!! Consensus seems to be that it was a hairline fracture originally, and then snapped due to all of the activity I was doing.

Thankfully, after being referred to an orthopedic surgeon, I find myself in a 5 lb dingy gray walking cast for four weeks. He stated that because the fibula is a non-weight bearing bone; as long as the angle of my ankle joint is correct (which it is), there is no need for immediate surgery. At the end of this month, I will head back for x-ray’s and if the bone is not healed, then we will discuss surgical tactics to pin the bone with a plate and screws.

So, my exercise routine that was just getting in gear has screeched to a standstill, yet again; which seems to be a pattern lately.

    Sorry that things have been difficult. Life manages to hand you unexpected things to overcome. Sounds like you're doing a good job of working through this. Keep your head in the game and the rest will follow. emoticon

    I've been out with an injury part of this year, too, and it stinks!

    Hey kiddo, sorry about all this, no fun! BUT, don't stop exercising, you've been doing so great! Do upper body stuff, keep going with the strength training and how about water treading or bike stuff to keep the cardio going? Maybe a rowing machine (not sure if you can do that without doing leg stuff too...)
