Flavored Water (friend or foe?)

Thursday, August 26, 2010

So I'm reading a book called Sweet Deception about all the dangers of sugar and sweeteners. Reading this information scares me quite a bit, especially since I load my water up with crystal light. Here I am thinking I'm making a better choice then drinking something sugar filled (because I can't drink plain water), but it turns out I'm not making a very healthy decision. Sure it's been better for my waistline then sugary drinks (like sweet tea!) but what about overall health? Man...it's scary what they say this stuff can do to you. Birth defects? Cancer? Diabetes? Emotional Disorders? Epilepsy? And that's just a few?

Geez....it's scary. So now I have to start getting myself off this crazy chemical and still whittle away my waist, which means staying away from sugar. So I guess I'll be experimenting with water and fruit juices. I'm hoping by buying different flavors of fruit juices, I can just add a little bit to my water and maybe even some club soda for that fizzy I like will help. And maybe even a little salt to replenish my electrolyte balance. Look at me, making my own recovery drinks...Crazy!

Hi Gina, nice to see you're back and at it (with zest, as always)!! Good for you for changing away from that "sweet deception." I just make up a batch of lemon water; you could add some natural sweetener like a bit o'honey or maple syrup. Sometimes I'll add an ounce or two of 100% (no sugar added) pomegranate or cranberry juice and flax meal (good for the liver).

My neighbor uses a product I think you can find at Sam's Club or Costco: zipfizz. It has about 100mg of caffeine, so for now I'm staying away, but you might like it. (too much tea can create oxolate kidney stones - I have a friend who just went through that- yikes - it's always something).

Costco has a variety pack I think neighbor said. Here's a link to shopping results online: http://bit.ly/cULuEP or see their site at www.zipfizz.com .

(I sound like I'm a commercial, but I don't even use it!) lol

I bought a Brita filter, and a squeeze sports-type bottle and it started me off being able to drink water flavourless. Try keeping it really cold. I also drink decaf /herbal tea with a bit of Splenda ( which isn't supposed to have all the side-effects).

I know it's only a few calories...that's not the problem. The issue is it's a chemical that can cause a crazy amount of health problems.

I use Crystal Light to put in my waters and its only a few calories. Not sure about the sugar though. I like my water plain but there are times when I want a little sweetness to it :)
