Life and the Living of it is NOW - Not WHEN We Get to Goal!

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Are you living your life waiting for your goal weight to show up? Are you putting off doing something amazing until you are thinner, healthier, lighter? Are you living in fear of anything that your weight has kept you from doing? Well, guess what? LIFE is passing you by while you wait! It is true. Think about this. If you were told you had ONE short year to live, would you let your weight hold you back from doing things you always wanted to do? Would you...really?

I spent hours this morning scouring Spark and reading blogs and comments on random teams. I compiled a list of things so many people were "going to do" when they got to goal and things they wouldn't do now because of their size. I'm not talking about rewards for losing weight. I am talking about things we won't do because we are allowing our weight to be a reason NOT to do these things. Here are some of the things I found out about my fellow Sparkers:

Water and Swimsuit related:
A bunch of us want to go to the beach, the ocean, the lake, swimming, snorkeling, on a cruise, learn to swim, white water rafting.

Air and/or Height related:
Quite a few listed sky-diving, paragliding, zip-lining (me!), flying for the first time in a plane, going on a roller-coaster and other amusement rides, bungee jumping.

Travel related:
Flying in a plane for the first time, going on a cruise, going to Europe, visiting family far away, going to Jerusalem, going to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, Disneyworld, Ireland, Morocco, New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

Self-Improvement and Life related:
Going back to school, starting a business, dance lessons, voice lessons, getting a job, meeting people with common interests, dating, having children, buying a new home, going to class reunions, night-clubbing, going to parties, dancing, public speaking, public singing.

Now, I am not unrealistic. I know that some people have to put up with the extra cost of traveling by plane when very heavy. Airlines are jerks about this, sometimes making you pay for an extra seat or extenders for seat belts. But you still CAN fly. And I also know that it is healthier for you and the baby if you aren't too heavy when you get pregnant. But you CAN have children. Adoption is a beautiful option...I know this first hand. I also know that some amusement park rides are uncomfortable if you are way too heavy and I know that some bungee-jumping and zip-line adventures have weight limits but those limits are accomodating up to about 250 pounds. Class reunions and get-togethers? Have you seen pictures of some of these things? MOST of the people look like you and me! MOST of the people will look at you fondly and with remembrance of the good times together...not at how you look now so much! REALLY! So many experiences we only get ONE chance at. Don't throw it away!

My point is this: Fat floats, swims, flys, jumps, sings, dances, loves, learns, speaks, travels, works, laughs, experiences, feels, craves, enjoys, and DESERVES to live life and embrace everything it has to offer as much as Thin does.

Do NOT put off LIVING and DOING what you desire to do because of your size. Keep on the journey to healthy living, but incorporate REAL LIVING into your journey. You never know if you will get the chance later on to do or have what you desire NOW. It's like that silly but true saying; Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, that is why it is called THE PRESENT. Give yourself the gift of really living NOW. TODAY. EACH DAY.

This is my year to face and conquer fears. I have no desire to jump from a plane or bungee-jump, but I have been intriqued by zip-lining for years. My daughter did this in high school and my husband a few years ago. Both of them loved it. I watched videos of zip-lining adventures and just thought how cool it would be to do this IF I wasn't so heavy and IF I wasn't afraid of heights and falling. Well...on Monday, May 23 I am going to turn 51 and I will have conquered those fears already. The weekend before that I am going to be in Wimberley, Texas zip-lining in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. There is a thread on the San Antonio Spark Team page titled MaryJane's Zipline Birthday Challenge Info. It is under the 'Challenge Yourself TODAY' forum on the page. I invite anyone who will be in the San Antonio and surrounding areas to join me. Follow the thread as the details get worked out. The more the merrier!

So, what's stopping you from living out your dreams NOW? Weight is NOT an issue! GO, DO, LIVE! DO IT TODAY!

Life will be here, whether we participate in it or not! Yes, there might be restrictions - but I hopefully have lived trying to work around them and not just giving up. For one thing, it makes you want to be smaller that much more. If you are hiking or snorkeling or whatever, you can appreciate what it would be like healthier and in better shape! Then when you go the next time, it's amazing how different you feel! :) Love this blog!!!

GREAT blog, MJ. I agree, of course! I try to embrace every day--- some days I succeed, some days I don't..... but I TRY to not let my weight keep me back. In fact, the only thing I have put off because of my weight has been the climbing thing, I think. I will think more about it and make sure there isn't something else.

Wow! This was a wonderful blog. I'm sure it really hits home for most people (It does for me). The main point is you are so right and we all do need to re-think our mindset and live for today! emoticon
