The Things They Carried

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Later this semester, we will be reading, "How to Tell a True War Story," which is taken from Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried. Have any of you read it? O'Brien is a Vietnam War vet, and all of his literature has a connection to the war. Sometimes it is a subtle connection, but not so much with this work.

I have been trying to think about the things that I carried into this battle that I am fighting just now. Sometimes I am so confused about who the enemy even is -- much like some of O'Brien's characters. I will have to study on this one a little more, and eventually I will get a good blog out of it.

In the meantime, you might snatch up the idea and write your own True War Story about The Things You Carried. If you do, please shoot me a line, so I can read it!

Happy Sparks!

What's my battle? Being scared by my fellow sparkers. LOL. I have an appointment on Feb 15 (regular checkup). If my tingle continues I will bring it up then.

Honestly self confidence and all that entails is one of my biggest hangups. I find it extremely hard when I'm not that talented or a high achiever in much. The world wants the prettiest, the smartest, the strongest, ect.

Wow this is a heavy subject. To much for me to take on right now. But it will keep me thinking.

Perhaps, but my battle is not really with my weight. It is much more personal than that.

Tough comparison between Viet Nam and weight loss. I will think on it as well.

    Hi Arkansasrainbow!
Just found your blog and am really interested in this idea of what am I carrying into this struggle with my weight. Here are a few things I know that I am carrying:
    1. Genetics, most of the women in my family history are heavy.
    2. My mother's critical voice. She always made me feel fat, even when I was young and very small. I know it was her own pain now, but the little child inside me still feels the sting.
    3. My hopes for a return to the healthy life I had and know I can have again.
    Thanks for posing this question.
