Get Involved and STAY INVOLVED!

I was sitting here thinking about how different my circle of friends is becoming lately. I've always had a lot of friends in my life, but being really involved with them hasn't been easy for the past two years with my hectic life and the struggles involved in caring for aging parents. Friends I made at my former job and friends I have had since high school are still around on Facebook, but getting together very often just doesn't materialize for me. It's still wonderful to stay in touch through that medium, though.
What I am in awe of is how many friends I have made through Spark and how many of those friendships have become "in the flesh" friendships. I've met many members at meet ups, and some of them have become off-Spark buddies.
I'm amazed at how diverse we all are, too. I am closing in on my 51st birthday, but my closest circle of friends I've made on Spark range from 25 to the 40s range. We all have different education levels, different socio-economic ranges, different religions, and are just DIFFERENT. But somehow through the common goal of a healthy lifestyle these lovely people have found something in me to bond with. Sure, we still get together to walk now and then and of course we have some 5Ks we do together as well as the Spark Meet Ups, but some of us have found that we genuinely like spending time together. I'm not talking just about the friends I personally have made; I'm aware of several bonds that have formed outside of my own friendships. Isn't that a wonderful thing?
So, I'm advising you here and now: If you need friends, if you are lonely or just looking to expand your circle of friendships, get more involved with your LOCAL Spark Teams. If the leadership on your team doesn't do meet ups, organize your own! Start a thread and ask "Hey, who wants to meet up at such and such park and do a nice walk and bring a lunch for afterwards so we can sit and chat?"
Or organize a movie night at your home with a stretching session before and afterwards. We recently had a meet up at an eclectic little beverage bar (smoothies and green tea kind of place) and had a nice light supper and a great visit and then most of us went to another members house where Wii Fit Zumba and Just Dance were showcased. It was a FUN night!
If you get involved with people who have a common goal such as obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle you have a huge chance at finding people who will support and encourage your efforts because they are walking on the same path as you! And who knows? Like me, you just might find some real friends in the process! Good luck!
