Better Than Nothing

Saturday, June 25, 2011

In a lifelong quest to quit trying to do everything the best I can...
(because there is not time to do everything the best I can; especially since I came down with CFS... chronic fatigue syndrome) nearly 10 years ago.

This past weeks and months my motto has been:

"Anything Is Better Than Nothing"

So if I don't get to exercise as much as I want to, I say it...
If I only get to ride a horse for 15 minutes, I say it...
If I only get part of the dishes or laundry done, I say it...
If the floor gets swept but not mopped, I say it....
When I only get to visit with a friend or see family for a short time...
and the list goes on.

I also said it when we finally planned a family vacation, our first. The boys are 21 and 22 and we had never had a family vacation before. It is hard to get a farmer to take a vacation because it takes so many people to fill his shoes. Well, I figured since we sold the milk cows a couple years ago; that the time would never get better, the boys will be busier and busier with their own lives... they need to have a "vacation" with us as a family, so they can have that to remember.

So, we decided on Alaska because of DH's relatives there that had told us many years ago that we needed to come visit and go halibut fishing. By the time you subtracted our traveling days for flying, we only had 4 and a half days in Alaska... which we were told that isn't much time for an Alaska trip...

But... my motto...

Anything is better than nothing... right???

And it was!!!!
We had a wonderful time. Everything was gorgeous and we caught our limit of 2 halibut each... the largest fish was 60 pounds, lots in the freezer now!

Of course, it took me down too far and I am suffering from it; but I wouldn't give the vacation back for anything. I just hope it doesn't take the rest of the summer for me to recover.

Last night I should have went straight to bed when I got home from work and slept until morning; but it was so nice out and what I really wanted to do was to garden and go for a horse ride. But there was nothing left of me...

So I laid on the couch and watched a couple episodes of "The Voice" that I had recorded.
Then, so I wouldn't get sad about the wasted evening; I went outside just before dark and rode Sammy bareback for about 15 minutes and did some groundwork turns and stretches with Lakota (his withers are real sore again, time for another chiro treatment for him).
Skip, I just talked to and gave her some treats... she was happy with that.

And I went to bed happier than I would have otherwise.

Anything is better than nothing... it can be applied to so much in our lives.

When I finally get the time to download the pictures I took, I will post some.

Meanwhile,
emoticon have a wonderful weekend spark buddies!

I am so happy for you that your family took that wonderful vacation together. Alaska is an experience your sons will remember forever.

And your philosophy of 'anything is better than nothing' is one we could all benefit from. So many of us feel that if we can't do something all the way - we shouldn't even bother trying. It's that old 'all or nothing' way of thinking that gets us into trouble.

It's a good lesson for all of us.

I am glad that you had a great time with your family. Can't wait to see the pictures. I hope it doesn't take you the rest of the summer to recover. It is great to spend a little time with the horses, it is just good for the soul. Hope you have a very restful Sunday.
