Hurricane Irene......and after

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Well, as I'm sure everyone knows - the east coast got hit with Irene over the weekend. New England had it's turn on Sunday - and what we thought was not going to be an event turned out to be an event.....

The rain started early in the day with light winds, but as we got towards 10AM, they started to pick up....I was just finishing making pancakes for breakfast and the power went out....I had just flipped the last 6 cakes....and poof.....thank goodness I had enough heat to finish cooking them, because the power didn't come back on......

The winde really picked up around lunch time....and we still were without power, so we quick grabbed the hamburger and cheese from the fridge and made burgers on the gas grill.....we were having fun at this point - feeling a little rustic and doing things around the house that we wouldn't have done had it been bright sunny and fully powered......

By dinner it was starting to get a little old without power....the heavy winds weren't as heavy any more - and the rain had slowed to a drizzle, so we started picking up in the yard.....what a mess oak trees make....YUCK.....we went for a few walks....a mile here a mile there......just checking out things....

dinner was a quick grab of the chicken in fridge....and more grilling....

It got dark around 7:30 - so we pulled the candles out and were ready - but only after 1 more walk.

Once back from the walk we settled in to a night of Sorry and Uno....we played until 10PM and then it was off to bed....

Boy is it dark without electricity anywhere....there were so many more stars in the sky......hurricane Irene had cleared out and just left the lack of power....

Monday morning found us still without power, and when we called the company - they said minimum of Tuesday - but more likely than not later...UGH...

The kids start school on Wednesday......

We went through the day - found a donut shop with power, bought 50 pounds of ice to try and save the goods in the fridge...found a friend with room in her freezer for that....

Just hung out.....

About 8PM the power came back on last night --- we thought that when the power came back on all of these lights and things would be on - we only had 1 light come on. We had unplugged all of the technology incase of surges (even though they are on protectors) so that was all off.......

Today was supposed to be the last day of Summer vacation for the boys - so we went for one last mountain bike ride/run - which was so not fun - with all of the branches and things that are down.....while out on the run - we got the automated reverse 911 call that said instead of tomorrow - school does not start until 9/6! One whole extra week of vacation...

One whole extra week without a routine...UGH.....

So that's my story in a nut shell. I'm not even going to try and catch up - I'm just plugging forward.

That and trying to decide if an October 1/2 marathon is good - seems that my brother forgot he was going to be in Aruba during the time in November....Not sure about that....although maybe I'll just go for it......

Is brother changing to the Half in Oct? You could still do the Nov by yourself & tease him the rest of your life about how he talked you into doing it then decided to lay on the beach & get a tan instead of running it!

I've been meaning to tell you!!!!! that my mom & my aunt won some contests that Martha's Vineyard was having a couple of weeks ago - from it's Facebook page. I don't know if it's close to you or if you are very familiar with MV, but since it's Mass, I wanted to tell you, LOL. My mom wrote a poem & my aunt entered a photo for these contests & won. I am pretty excited for them. I think my aunt gets ferry tickets & my mom a $100 gift cert to an Oyster Bar (or something like that).

I'm glad you are and your family are safe. Some of the pictures I've seen look really bad.

I bet the kids loved the extra few days of vacation. LOL I know I would have.

Keep us posted on the October 1/2 marathon.

I am glad to read that you and yours are okay after Irene passed through. I was wondering how it affected you, and while it stinks, I'm glad all you had was a loss of electricity.

I'm glad you guys made it through. I still remember Hurricane Andrew. I had just moved to Miami about 3 months before. The area was completely unprepared. One weatherman gave warnings about it. The other local news channels kept quiet about it didn't want to hurt local tourism at the time it was just a tropical storm. By the time it hit the Bahamas it strengthened to a category 3. By the time it hit us it was a category 5. There had never been a category 5 it was the first. All the building codes were for 150 mph winds. Andrew had winds in excess of 200 mph and storm surges over 20 feet high. Andrew made South Florida look like a war zone the damage done went into the billions of dollars. We were without power for almost 2 months. No kidding. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before and hope to never have to deal with again. That was August 24th 1992 I remember it like it was yesterday. Hard to believe that was almost 20 yrs ago. If something like that was to NYC it would have been way worse. I'm glad everyone in your family is okay.
