Seriously thinking I am crazy....

Sunday, September 04, 2011

So I have 49 days until the half....and lately 4 miles is proving to be a struggle. I know that once the kids get back into school - I will have the morning to get that long run in - but the last week has just been HARD.

My legs are tired, I have tightness in places that I don't usually have tightness and I have arch pain in my right foot when I am not wearing my sneakers (or any sneakers.....not just my runners)....

It's been a tough week, recovering from Irene for the first couple of days, and then on Thursday my 12 year old thought he would add to the mix and wipe out on his mountain bike and break his collar bone....

Friday we did get to the Deutsche Bank Championship Golf Tournament to see how golf should be played and had some fun there.....wow are those guys good....

Saturday was full of baseball...

Today is the big family birthday party....with all of us within 12 days (4th, 9th, 9th and 16th) it is just easier....

I am whining - I know it - I am just anxious that this 13.1 is going to be too much for me.....my long run this week is 7....and I have never done anything more than 6....haven't done 6 in 2 weeks either......so - anxious.....

I also am fighting that internal demon of speed vs. distance....I can't seem to slow down....

Someone suggested a book on my ipod, and I think I might have to try that - with a book there is no cadence and I can get lost in the voice.....hopefully itunes has books for my type of ipod....

This will be a new experience for you...that is enough to make you anxious!! That being said, I know you can do it! The book sounds like a good idea to me, too.

Hang in there! One step at a time. You can do it. It's okay to be anxious. And ESPECIALLY with everything you have been dealing with!!! Just remember you are an inspiration (to me!!!) so hang in there and keep going. Get a good book, do what works, and just try to keep going. So proud of what you've done so far!!

You sound just like my daughter did when she was training. You can do this. Just keep following your plan and you will get there.

I suggest you do a walk/run ratio. It is a PROVEN method in all of Jeff Galloways running books. He is an expert 1/2 and full marathoner. Use whatever ratio you want as long as you get in your walk breaks..they will help rejuvenate you and get you through the 13 miles...I would do a run 2 mins or 3..and walk 1...the WHOLE way through! GOOD LUCK!

I like to get the Harry Potter books, or a good mystery on my IPOD. There is no better way to run, totally distracting.

Robyn. As I type this on my iPhone I am nodding with what you have to say. When you go on your long run... Think it is ONLY a distance run... And extra 10-12 minutes longer than your normal run... It is to slowly get your body used to the distance and the time on your feet... Not speed!!!! I repeat NOT speed. When I got my miles up to 12 last time, I thought how I've walked this long before... Why not slow run it? I understand your fears... I feel a lot the same... Slow it down in the beginning of your runs and when you know you've got to the last few, see if you can speed it up... But for training... S l o w!!!!!! And even at your half... It's all about you. What's your goal? Want to walk a little? Run the whole thing? Finish under 2:40? It's your race... This is what you will accomplish and you can do it!!! Slow..... We will do it!!!!!! :)

You can totally do it! Running is a mental game, maybe even more than a physical one - believing you can do it will take you further than you think.

You CAN do it. Really. Make yourself slow down, whatever it takes. For my LSR I am averaging 12-12:30 miles. I walk more than I'd like but I keep telling myself the speed doesn't matter for this half. It's making the distance that matters.

And thanks for reminding me about getting new shoes before the race. I counted up my miles on my current pair & am around 150, so I ordered some new ones yesterday. Asics - which I've never had before. I hope they do ok for me.

I'm not a runner and therefore not an expert either, but it seems to me that these emotions would be totally normal for what you're doing.

You're going outside your comfort zone - you should feel anxious.

Are you crazy?! YEAH!!! Crazy good! Crazy inspirational! Crazy Cool!!
I'm excited for you and I KNOW you can do it and you will - you'll be awesome! CRAZY AWESOME!!!!
