Labor Day 5K

Monday, September 05, 2011

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes - I really wasn't clear --- it wasn't my birthday yesterday - I don't get that day until the 16th....but because my little man is the 4th, hubby and big guy are the 9th, and then me on the 16th, we have a big birthday party for everyone at once.....thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes though. I am going to save those until the 16th!!!! I am not giving in to the birthday early this year either - because I will turn the big 4-0, so I am hanging on to the 30's for all I have......

Today was the day - the day that my little man and I had been waiting for since July....the Labor Day 5K.

This race is an annual run in our town to raise funds for the Cross Country team...how fitting - huh.....

I have run it every year since 2007.....last year, after I was done....my little man told me he wanted to run it with me - so I said no problem....we'll train during the Summer to get ready.

He runs with the running club at school in the Spring and Fall, and seems to enjoy running - so why not.

After school got out for the Summer - I started talking about getting ready - so it wouldn't be hard --- told him we should run twice a week - and build up our distance.....well - we ran - some - but not like I would have liked.....totally not cool to run with Mom....

But - he still wanted to run the race - so I signed him up - and today was the day....

Never figured it would be 85 and WAY HUMID....but this is New England - so you get what you get.....

The gun went off and away we went.......he did great for the first mile - we had a 9:42 time for that mile - he stopped for water and drank half and dumped the other half on his head.....

We saw hubby and the big guy at about 1.7 miles.....here we are....
he has the white tshirt and I have orange...

About here - he decided he needed a walk break - so we walked for a minute or so - and then I pushed him to run some more....

We finished the last part of the race running and walking - I didn't think he needed the walking all the time so I tried to pace him a little slower - and he did great.

Here we are coming into the finish --- this clearly demonstrates that he had more in the tank then he was letting on - he was goofing off....

It wasn't my best race, that is for sure....however I felt really good that I was able to pace my little man and encourage him for success!!!!

It may not have been your best race time-wise, but it was your best because you were doing it with your 7 year old. Way to go!!!

I can tell he had a great time! I can tell in the pictures. He's going to go to school tomorrow & tell his friends.
He is going to be a runner just like Mom & Dad.
This is such a wonderful blog. I love it!

What fun! I wish I had been encouraged to run and be active when I was a kid (I wish I had encouraged my kids, too). Maybe I can encourage my grandchildren ;)
Consider my birthday wishes an early birthday present - the way things go for me, I'll probably forget when it's your real birthday!
