Setbacks Again: Oh! This is Normal!

Haven't posted to the Spark Blog in so long, thought I would write about some more setbacks I've had in recent weeks. Specifically, in the last 4 weeks I've had 2 injuries that kept me from exercising each for about a week.
When I strained a calf muscle about 3 or 4 weeks ago and realized I was going to have to lay off running for a week or more, I was SO UPSET. This reaction came as a shock to me. Why was I so upset?
As I began to think about it, I realized I'd move a big chunk of my self worth into my workouts. When my workouts had to stop, I felt I was a failure.
So, I interrupted these negative feelings with thoughts like:
*It's a journey to fitness and journeys always have detours
*Fitness and living healthy is a long term commitment in my life. I will not get upset by one week
*I am not what I do. I am a worthwhile person whether or not I run
In a short time I was feeling good about the layoff. I was even realizing that a rest period was probably overdue for me. I had been so obsessively following a fitness class (running) that I was ignoring a clear need for rest.
Eased back into running within about 8 days and was back on the the normal schedule a couple of days later. Then, BAM! Another setback! I was lifting awkwardly at work and strained my back pretty severely.
This time I was ready and immediately thought: this is normal. Adapting to what life throws at you is what you have to do. Otherwise, you'll go crazy!
So 9 days later brings us up to today. I ran 4 easy miles this morning pain free.
Even though I lost over 2 weeks out of the last month of training for my next 10K Sept. 17th, I'm not worried about it AT ALL! In training runs I'm already way, way ahead of my personal best 10k. And heck, this time last year I couldn't even run more than 20 minutes slow at a time!
I'm adopting a new philosophy: Setbacks are normal. Don't be surprised when they happen. Roll with it the best you can and keep the big picture in mind.
