We are back into school, fall sport mode full bore....Today was the first day that we got it full barrel....

My 10 year old is going to have a hard school year. He struggles....it is not something that comes naturally to him. We have worked hard with him, and even have had tutors and all sorts of extra help....but memorization just isn't his thing - so he struggles with spelling and math facts....today he brought home 6 sheets of homework. To those students that school is easy - they were probably done in 30 minutes....My guy - worked for 1 hour and 15 minutes on those 6 sheets. I did help him....did the "writing" on some but made him do the thinking....and we weren't done yet.....after his hockey practice it was another 30 minutes on his spelling words....25 for the week...and like I said - not a strong suit....so I break the list into 6 word groups...in hopes that we have some success for some and have to work on others....

I don't remember my older son having this much homework, and when I asked him if he did - he was like NO WAY......so I can't wait to get to the bus stop tomorrow and see how the other 4th graders that aren't in little man's class made out.

We had hockey practice tonight too - and that was the tough part...he loves hockey - but when he gets home from school at 3:35, eats a snack and then works on homework until a little past 5, it doesn't leave much "free" time for him - he had 20 minutes to play with his buddy before it was time for hockey - which he didn't want to go to - because he wanted to play ---- so with all of the school work - hockey is going to become a negative ....NOT FAIR....he loves hockey .....

I had my niece today too - and we ventured out for a 4 mile run. I am really amazed that I no longer have trouble with the 4 miles....it is such a great feeling. I did forget to put my lip balm on my lips when I went out - and I think all of the licking I did - got them a little sunburned.....they feel all puffy and swollen....

Tomorrow is long run day - 8 miles......little nervous....but just going to work my Galloway way --- and see how it goes.....hopefully it is OK.....

Does your son have reading issues too? My daughter is dyslexic and it effects her spelling and writing. The school finally had her tested and the spelling list were cut to 10 from 20 and she was also given audio text books. It's tough when you see them spending hours and hours on homework.

Homework is in full swing at our house too. My 6th grader has been bringing home plenty. It makes it hard when you have the sports in the evening.... they do want to have friend time too.

One thing that I started with my kids this school year is that every 100% spelling test that they bring home they will earn $1.00. If they get 100% every week for the whole month, they earn $5.00. Something to consider.....

I am also doing this with my older kids for their tests in Math, Social Studies, Science.... every A will earn them a dollar. My kids like earning money!

...can't trust that day. Yes, it is suddenly school.
Good run...but you know, Jeff would tell you not to run the day before your long run. Poor lips.

My son had similar issues and I remember he and I spending hours doing homework. My DD wouldn't even bring homework home - she'd get it done in study hall... never seemed quite fair how one kid had to work so hard at it and it came so easily for the other. Your son is lucky to have you as a mom - he'll thank you some day for being there to help him.

About your running - I've seen others mention Galloway - what is that?
