Tuesday was my birthday

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Tuesday was my birthday. I remember I posted my first blog post on my birthday three years ago. Not much of a post. I’ve never been a wordy person. I haven’t posted many blogs, but l’m still here.

In the last three years I’ve changed my Sparkname, changed my pictures, changed my page, changed the background color several times depending on my mood; I’ve taken my page offline for a time. I’ve made it private, public, posted a few blogs, and joined a few teams, never very active in them. I’ve taken breaks from SP, but I’m still here.

I’ve had some hard lessons in my life but I’m still here.

I was what my dad called “pleasingly plump.” Even as a child I knew that there was only one person who should find my plumpness pleasing…and that was me. But I didn’t. I can remember in grade school that I wished I could cut the fat off my midsection. My mother would say do situps, run around the block. And I would a few times but I always thought that there must be an easier way. Always looking for the easy way.

I turned to my food. At age 16 I started reading everything I could about nutrition and health. I was in a constant state of indigestion, so I started with Colon Health by Dr. Norman Walker.

So I became a health nut. I read and followed Let’s Eat Right to Keep Fit by Adele Davis, Sugar Busters!: Cut Sugar to Trim Fat by H. Leighton Steward, The Pritikin Program for Diet and Exercise by Nathan Pritikin, Dr. Siegal’s Natural Fiber Permanent Weight-Loss Diet. That one REALLY worked for me. With all that fiber, I got down to 135 pounds from 175 all-time high. Then I got hemorrhoids.

Then I did Weight Loss Clinic and got down to 118 pounds by eating 500-800 calories a day. (I KNOW)

But I felt great at that weight.

I've read countless books and articles in my quest for better health and fitness. I have started and stopped many plans (that were working). Why stop? Whoever stops something that is working before they get to their goal? Well, people who get hemorrhoids from following a plan that is working, that’s who.

To this day the word plump does not sound pleasing at all.

At age 48 I found a Naturopathic doctor who set me straight. My fasting blood sugar was 113. He told me anything above 100 is cause for concern and that I was headed for diabetes.

Tuesday morning my blood sugar was 82, the lowest it’s ever been. The lowest I could get was 92 and that was on a strict nutritional plan. And I struggled to keep it under 100.

I attribute my 82 BS to consistent exercise and healthy eating.

I still have fat to lose around my midsection. And I am determined to get it off. I know what works. I know how hard I will have to work. I know it takes discipline. Now that I’ve got my BS under control, I will concentrate on the extra fat around my midsection. I am tired of looking in the mirror and seeing my pregnant self at age 57.

You have really done a great job of finding what works for you. I wish I could do the same.

Last Monday when I went to the doctor he was convinced I had full blow diabetes but I don't and I don't even have prediabetes. If there is a reason for that it is because I watch what I eat part of the time and get some exercise in. I don't want diabetes so I really have to straighten up.
