My January Diet

Many people decide to start the new year with resolutions and for many that includes the D-word. I'm no different, it's just that my "diet" is different. First off, I love food and I love to grocery shop. The hunter-gatherer is strong in me and I enjoy prowling the aisles looking for new things and bargains. The problem is, in my two person family, where one person has to be very careful about not eating more than she needs, food tends to stockpile. Thus, my periodic dieting. Instead of restricting the food intake into my body (which I do all the time anyway), I restrict the food intake into my home. I decided that this January I would, with the exception of milk and my weekly delivery of fresh produce, strive to get by with what I have. This makes me mindful of just how abundant my life is, forces me to be more creative and opens up space in the overburdened freezer, fridge and shelves. It has been both easy and difficult. I used up all my eggs on January 1, making a dozen breakfast sandwiches to freeze. I considered whether they might count as perishables that were allowed to be replenished, but decided to try to do without. I wanted to make something last night that called for lemon juice. No lemons in my box this week, no juice in the house. I used sherry vinegar and it was different, but just fine. It's hard not to make purchases, to tell myself, "So what if you're out of black beans...you have pintos and white beans and all sorts of lentils. Use what you've got!" Running low on bread? You've got yeast and flour...you know what to do. I think I'll easily make it through the month and could probably get through February as well, but I miss shopping and I'm running out of cheese!
