Labor Day

Thursday, February 07, 2013

Last Tuesday I met with members of my book club, "Reading Between the Wines" As the title implies it is equally about the grapes as the written word - hee, hee. Not to mention the appies the members bring. We do talk a bit about the book and then the sky's the limit for conversation.

One person told me of this clever idea. She always brings the mother of someone celebrating a birthday a bouquet of flowers. The day before their child's birthday they most likely were in labor, so she celebrates their "Labor Day". Yeah, I know we have Mother's Day but there is always room for one more reason to celebrate!

Last night, was the day before my 24 year old twin boys birthday and we had a dessert party for our extended family. I gave a toast remembering my labor day. It was a very difficult birth. I had toxemia and almost died from a stroke. The boys lives were in jeopardy so I had to be induced early. They were little preemies. One of the twin boys was minutes away from passing away but miraculously survived. It took my husband 16 years to tell me that a nurse had told him not to tell me that one of the babies might not make it through the night. She was afraid I might have a stroke. I remember my Ryan in special care nursery with tubes and a little woolen cap and only 4 pounds 2 ounces. After a week in hospital we managed to take Gavin home and had to wait another week for Ryan to get strong enough to come home. Even now, when I look at them both I see them as miracles because they have thrived and have truly become fine young men in spite of a rather rocky start. Labor Day is for all mothers even if they adopt or foster children because we labor to raise our children the best we can.

It was easy to tell the boys about Labor Day. How I view them as the fruits of my labor and that raising them has truly been a Labor of Love.
