Sister, sister

Thursday, February 07, 2013

I, as little sister, managed to finally inspire my big sister Arlene to exercise! She is 5 years older so the usual chain of command is that she advises me. So, naturally, I am thrilled by this event. She belongs to a beautiful athletic club and has taken up swimming including taking a few lessons. Her participation was delayed as she took at least a month to get ready. She informed me as to her progress in this order: "I got myself my own locker, I bought myself hair products for thus aforementioned locker, I now have makeup that I will keep in thus aforementioned locker, did I mention I now have special gym shoes in this locker?" Er, after a month of this getting ready I finally said, "Well the locker is in great shape, have you set a tootsie in the pool yet?" You are all one step ahead now because I know you all guessed a resounding, NO.

Well she is finally in the swim of things. She goes swimming a number of times a week. About a year or two ago she suffered a severe shoulder fracture when she fell on icy ground. In spite of physical therapy she could no longer lift one of her arms up very high, less straighten it out. Today, she plopped down on my couch and said, "Look at what my arm can do?" With that, she lifted it up high and could almost completely straighten it out. She credited the swimming with this victory.

"Ah, my dear you just discovered the joy of the NSV", I replied. She was intrigued and I told her all about non-scale victories. Little sister leading the way for big sister - I am loving this!

Huh, outfitting a locker with all the products to make you beautiful, man I've been doing things wrong! I look like, pardon the expression, crap when I exercise! lol! I don't "glo" or even perspire, I SWEAT! So happy though that she's doing so well and has more mobility in her arm, that's awesome! And way to go leading the way! You rock!

Great blog, I'm so happy that your sister is seeing those NSV and that you've led the way. What I really love is the way you gently guided your sister and allowed her to start this journey at her own rate. Truly beautiful story, thank you.

So as a little sister it stays that way? I always wondered. Mine died at 41 when I was 32. I'd give anything to have her boss me around again. Still, I'm sorry, I shouldn't take away from your victory. And just how long have you been trying to get the NSV thru her head? Ah, well, she's learned two things now. One exercise helps, and two, sometimes little sisters DO KNOW SOMETHING.

I empathize. I too am the younger... bro +5, sis +7...
They 'always' know/knew best, right or wrong, then and forever.
