So that's Power Walking

Thursday, March 14, 2013

In an answer to my question yesterday, WHat IS POWER WALKING, Thanks to MT-Moonchaser we have found this to be the answer....

Power walking or speed walking is the act of walking with a speed at the upper end of the natural range for walking gait, typically 7 to 9 km/h (4.5 to 5.5 mph). To qualify as power walking as opposed to jogging or running, at least one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times It does not say anything about heart rate that I found, so I’m assuming that has not as much to do with it.. So I do not wog, jog or run if I’m power walking... So My next question is then in the Sparks fitness resource center site they have a blog about a walking test. According to it at 17 minutes a mile, for my age I’m boarder line fair to average so I sure would like to see how those others who rate higher walk to make their steps faster with out running or jogging... What do they do?

I read an article about power walking and they said take shorter strides which sounds counter productive but actually it means you foot has less distance to go to start the next stride. I find that when I am walking if I can find the "sweet spot" that stride length that just feels really comfortable that I can usually go a bit faster.

I read the article that NHES220 referenced and it has some real good tips. I may have to try this out as soon as all the local sidewalks melt off enough. I think the interval training that it suggested would be good. Currently I've been using the Leslie Sansone walking DVD's. I hadn't thought of doing HIIIT in connection with walking...

I bet that over time as you power walk, you get faster...just like a wogger, jogger or runner does. Glad you have an answer now. I think Power Walking would have to include the arms being engaged as NHES220 says.

I am not into Power Walking, but I did find a web site with tips: http://www.the-fitness-walking-guid
It does say to engage your arms to help and not to lengthen your stride. There is also a link to some Power Walking songs that are 137 beats per minute to help you along.
