Welcome to Spring Break-- Parent Edition

Saturday, March 23, 2013

Oh, spring break, we meet again.
The kids have been cooped up inside all winter, are stir crazy & testy...nothing like a week of play in the great outdoors to welcome spring, right?
Wait. We're supposed to get snow tomorrow & only be in the 30s this week. Well played, Spring, well played.
This is when I remind myself that I'm incredibly blessed to be able to stay home with them on a daily basis. Even when they'd rather be with their friends, lol. & this will be an excellent exercise in parental patience.

Last weekend I did get my corned beef! My aunt & uncle (who own a local butcher shop) invited us to their house on St. Patrick's day for corned beef, potatoes & cabbage. Then they surprised Robert with cake & ice cream for his birthday, so of course I had to try some of that too. It was fantastic! Yummy!

Then Monday I had my Reuben & made gluten-free banana bread. It was all very tasty, but after two days of too much sugar & salt & fat, I was feeling sluggish all day on Monday. After getting back to clean foods on Tuesday, I honestly felt like I had a hangover! Sugar withdrawl, maybe? By Wednesday I felt back to normal & that "lightness" I feel when I'm not eating processed foods was back. Yay!

This past Tuesday, Robert (the hubs) & I started Jamie Eason's Live Fit challenge on bodybuilding.com. The first two weeks, there is NO CARDIO. When I first read that, I almost felt like Iike I might have a panic attack, lol. Her explanation is that she wants all those calories that you're eating to be going towards building muscle.

The workouts so far I can handle. It's the eating every few hours that I have trouble with! I'm sure that other parents can relate. Some mornings I'm lucky to get anything for breakfast, let alone eat within the first hour of waking. I'm just so busy getting the kids ready & out to school that sometimes I don't finish eating, even if I've started eating, until 9am. Then you're supposed to have a mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner (this usually ends up being my protein shake time) & finally one more snack (with no carbs/starches). That's a LOT of eating! I'm more of a breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner kinda gal. At least those I can usually remember to eat.

This ends up being, for the ladies, about 1500-1600 cals, give or take some for what veggies you're eating. I usually eat closer to 1300-1400, so that coupled with the no cardio rule kinda freaked me out. & I did put on about a pound...but I'm hoping that after a rest day tomorrow, I'll find out that it was just extra fluid in my tissues from my muscles gettin' bigger. ;-)

My Y friend, Sonya, did the same program last year & she just assured me to trust the program & by phase 2, after cardio has been added back in, that my muscles will be revealed. Yay, muscles!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! We just started Pocahontas & are gonna pop some popcorn & snuggle in. If I can get these yahoos to hold still, that is!
