Lesson from the Cruise

Tuesday, April 09, 2013

One of the things I did that seemed to keep me focused on health when I vacationed in Hawaii was to pick out excursions with an exercise component in them. All age groups were involved in these excursions so they were not that physically challenging and yet there was an exercise component in them.

So, I hiked in a rainforest and swam in a waterfall on Maui and snorkeled on Kona. It was so much better than just wasting time shopping. Many of the people on our cruise ship spent time in Hawaii at Walmart! I know you can get Hawaiian souvenirs cheap there but really - Walmart? You can have the Walmart experience at home. Can't say I get that at all.

I was very amused when one of the members of our progressive trivia team challenge who was a beautiful young German girl spent her time in Walmart in Honolulu. Her mission was to purchase Cheerios as souvenirs. Apparently, there are no Cheerios in Germany! Anyhow different strokes for different folks but I am glad I chose to try and be healthy and on the move.

I do confess I am still nibbling on the delicious macadamia nuts in various flavours that we bought at the Mauna Loa Factory in Hilo. emoticon

    I am proud of you.
Taking advantage of seeing and doing those things that just are not available at home (which is probably why you are visiting there to begin with).
Like you, I cannot imagine wanting to spend time in a Walmart (or any other chain store for that matter!) when on vacation in Hawaii !! Maybe because I do not live to shop?

emoticon we cruised the Caribbean in February and the thought of eating during our travels had me concerned- airport days moreso than days at sea. in total i gained 3 lb, which quickly disappeared again once we got home. Our family chose active excursions, we enjoyed the abundance of fresh fruit and veggies ( a lot of the appeal was the array available in the middle of our very cold and deep Canadian winter) and other lovely dishes available, even dessert. somehow the 'Death by Chocolate" late night extravaganza lost out to sea breaazes on our balcony. My calorie output went into stairs- even with arthritic joints- my one day total was 71 flights

How many nights was your cruise? what cruise line? and what ports? one way or round trip? Hawaii sounds like a destination for my bucket list. Spark mail me please emoticon

Some ideas to consider. I am already thinking about when we head to CO to see our son and then right on to FL. I don't do well in restaurants, so I avoid them at home. Can't do that on vacation. Then have to fit in exercise! Thanks!
