Since getting a fabulous June team challenge from Emma to blog about our strengths I have been pondering mine. I think I will blog about them throughout the month, one at a time. Yes, there is more than one. That sounds conceited because my mom always told me not to brag and to be modest. Oh well, sorry mom!

My first one is that I am what you call a cockeyed optimist. I always try to see the best in people and situations. I try to be empathetic even when someone is totally rude so that I can see the situation from their perspective. For instance, if someone rudely shoves into me in a hurry on the street, I think about the burdens they must be carrying to make them act that way. Of course, being an optimist has its price of yes, disappointment. Some friends don't come through the way I would naturally expect them to. People don't rise to the occasion like of course I think they should. However, along with the optimism comes the reminders to self to suspend judgment. People do the best they can with the knowledge they have at the time. I think it was Maya Angelou who said,

"I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better."

I chose this particular strength to start the challenge because it is very challenging to be an optimist in a world that can be "whatever" (blaise) or jaded and cynical. To me that's the easy way out - begin with negativity and you won't be disappointed. Not for me, I am going to keep putting out the positive energy and see if something nice doesn't just appear! Often, it does you know! emoticon

The world needs optimists. Good does exist in this crazy world. It's not always easy to find but it's around here somewhere. :-)

Optimism definitely has it's ups and downs but always focusing on the negative can make you ill so taking your chances with being positive is good for your health! :)

It reminds me of how if someone cuts you off while driving, or the checkout girl is rude to a person, instead of getting mad about it, it does help to think that perhaps they are going through something really tough or difficult in their lives, and like you said not to judge them. Thank you for sharing, positive energy is contagious. emoticon

Wow! I can relate to your optimism well. I really want to believe in the best in people all the time. People call me naive and gullible -- and I suppose I am to some degree. But I prefer to err on this side than live in the cynical space than many do!

You Go Girl! It's no surprise we're friends! emoticon
