Healthy Shopping

Friday, June 28, 2013

Today was so empowering, making much better choices and some outside of my comfort zone. I'm not usually a fish eater but lately I eat it most days. The protein is amazing without the carbs and fat. Today we opted not just for various types of fillets but also Salmon Sausage Cajun Style. Also picked up the ingredients to do our pizza on the weekend (cauliflower base). I'm also pushing myself to try new fruits..

This is what I perceive as healthy

veggies and the dragonfruit I forgot in the fruit pic)

What are your 'go-to' healthy foods?

Being summertime, my go to usually involves the grill. =) Grilled pork or sirloin or chicken.... I'm not a fish person... but.... I'm seriously considering trying to find some filets that I can throw on the grill and see if I can learn to grill a fish. =) haha. We'll see how THAT goes... the ONLY fish I've ever grilled before is large mouth bass, (caught in a local pond, cleaned and readied by me), thrown in a foil pack with lots of butter. Well these days that's not an option for me. I don't even use much butter anymore, for my foilpacks I usually just do a spray of olive oil. Citrus fruits are not kind to me.... although I love them, I suffer for days.... so throwing lemon on there (the worst of all citrus) isn't an option either. But you have inspired me to look for a good cut of fish and we'll see what we can do with it. =) Can't hurt to try right? I'll be sure to have one of those healthy choice top chef frozen entrees for back up, just in case. =) Mark loves fish, so if I could learn to cook it and eat it, would make one night I didn't have to cook two seperate meals.... that would sure be nice!!! Other go to foods are salads with lots of greens and veggies. YUM! =)

Thanks for this blog, it opens my mind to new ideas! =)

Thanks for telling me you replied. I didn't see a notification about it.

I only buy Haas Avocados (the black ones...pop out the little thing on the top to make sure it's still green inside)...the others are too hard for my liking. I add a little onion, garlic, lime juice and cayenne (some like tomatoes) and smash it all together in a bowl and eat them with tortilla chips (Santita is our favorite) or homemade pita chips (cut up a pita like a pizza & put in the oven to toast it). I could eat it straight out of the bowl or instead of mayo on a sandwich. Yummo!

I haven't tried kale chips. I typically put them in a pot with a tiny bit of oil & plenty of garlic and sauté until they're done enough for us (totally wilted). I do spinach the same way.

Velmatulip, I've heard a lot of really great things about Kale chips. Have you tried making those at all yet? I'm planning on it soon. I really haven't tried avocados but I'll make sure they're on my next list!

Keep_going247, That sounds like a wonderful go-to option! I'm planning on working pitas, and tortillas into my menu more!

emoticon on your healthy shopping trip! I used to hate fish (only because I swallowed a bone as a child), but now eat more seafood than any other animal product. I love most fruits and vegetables, especially avocados, kale, spinach, bananas, strawberries and pineapple.

emoticon Everything looks so good. I think you've given me some great ideas.

My go-to healthy foods (when i can't bring myself to cook) is a spinach salad with store-bought roasted chicken, any veggies i can find and stuff them all whole wheat pita with a tbsp of salsa on top.
