Mrs Palmer

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

My girl is gravely ill; she is honest, loving, affectionate, patient, imaginative, and zen-like in her ability to wait for the other cats to eat first.

There is no hope for recovery; we await the results of blood tests to see what the outcome might be. She has kidney disease and her pre-existing heart condition makes it tricky to treat. Pushing hydration for the kidneys could put her into full-fledged heart failure. We are hoping that she can have a few weeks or months of a nice life in spite of her blindness--her retina is detached--in both eyes evidently. She has hypertension and we have already started treating that.

In the last 24 hours she has not "trumpeted". She likes to bring a toy to our feet, trumpeting triumphantly as she does. She has always been an independent cat of patient philosophy with a bit of no-nonsense about her. In the past year, however, she has become a real cuddler and nuzzler. Her affection for me and my husband has quickly surpassed that we've experienced from other cats. We need and we knead each other.

what a lovely member of your family, and what a wonderful full life she has had, complete with maturity and change in personality-- a sign of a very satiated and fulfilled existence.

If these are her final moments, then I hope that they are filled with comfort and peace.

    Love to you and yours.

Natalie, I hope you do get a little more quality time with your precious Mrs. Palmer. Losing my Rafe, the best boy ever, just when I learned I had cancer was one of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with. I know you will do what's best for her, and she knows it, too. I think all that extra affection may be her way of saying, "It's OK, I know this isn't your fault. I know you love me, and I thank you for all the care you've given me all these years." But it's so, so hard . . . they are so very special.

Natalie, reading this brought tears to my eyes. I so remember when we lost our Echibon - its been almost 10 years yet to this day when I open a can of tuna I think of her (it was her VERY favorite treat so when I made tuna salad I'd pour the juice I drained off with just a bit of tuna over her food - she LOVED that!) Hugs!!

My heart goes out to you. It is so hard to lose such wonderful companions. I hope all is peaceful for her, for all of her remaining time.

Aw what a pretty kitty. I know it's difficult to even contemplate losing them. But then you're also dealing with vet bills and fear that she's in pain and suffering. My darling Purrl has also gotten much more clingy and cuddly in the past year or so. My vet says it's common as they get older and some dementia kicks in, they get more reliant on you because you are definitely what is familiar to them even if nothing else is. Your baby being blind I'm sure makes her feel comforted to be near you. I hope you still have some time for cuddles and loves before you must say goodbye to Mrs. Palmer. What a great name!

    Take care!!

She is quite a pretty girl. I've felt the curiosity and the sadness from having watched and cared for a friend's girl whom I still love very much. Is there much beside knowing they are well-loved and well cared-for and acknowledging our gratitude for their gift of happiness? Only more of it would matter, I think.

Natalie, I'm so sorry to hear about your precious cat. I hope that Mrs. Palmer can heal from her illness. Being an animal lover, I truly can relate to what you are feeling. Last year, I lost my beloved beagle. Know that I am here for you. Sending comforting hugs to you.

Oh, Natalie, I'm so sorry to hear this about your beautiful girl. We can truly empathise with you here having lost 2 cats unexpectedly within 6 weeks of each other during earthquake months. It is just so agonising when a loved pet animal is ill. Is there any hope for recovery?
