Update on Mrs Palmer

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

I spoke with the vet; initially he thought that Mrs Palmer had kidney failure but the test results show that she has hyperaldosterone. She has an adrenocarcinoma. She cannot have it surgically removed because of her congenital cardiac conditions---she does have a feline cardiologist who has verified that she would not withstand surgery.

The bright news is that she might have some good days left with medication for hypertension and a potassium supplement to her diet.
The vet gave her subcutaneous fluids yesterday and that has helped her mood a lot. She has started to trumpet and carry toys around again. Her general brightness and alertness has returned.

So we wait and see. And we knead and we need.

I love the name Mrs. Palmer. I love my two drooling dogs, but I have to say that my cats are really special. Mrs. Palmer must be such a cat. I am sorry that Mrs. Palmer has this condition. Take care emoticon

We had a somewhat similar situation with my mother's dog Charlie, but it was the "opposite" of aldosterone that was his problem (he had Cushing's). There is another dog (Romeo) two houses down with hyper secretion of aldosterone. Both dogs were being treated successfully by the same vet and perked up enough to have - in Charlie's case, several good months. Mom also needed this time to see her dog be happy again as long as he could be.

Mrs. Palmer may know, in her own way, of her limited time, and is devoting extra love to you in advance. How wonderful it is that you have extra time to return the favor!

Oh dear Natalie. How painful to be faced with separation from one we love. I hope in these days with Mrs. Palmer there is joy for all of you along with the pending sorrow. I would hug you if I could... an emoticon just doesn't do the trick...

Natalie, I was sorry to hear about Mrs. Palmer and enjoy the time you have left with her. I lost two of my pets during this last month, my 14 year old darling dog and my precious 15 year old silver Maine Coon. They were both ill, and it was time but it was still very hard. I tried to spend as much time with them as possible and spoiled them terribly. I take comfort in that they were much loved and well cared for during their entire lives, and I'm sure you can do the same.

I'm glad she is feeling better. This is similar to what happened to Rafe. He had an inoperable tumor wrapped around his intestines. With steroids and subcutaneous fluid, the vet thought he might have 6-12 months, but he warned me that if the steroids stopped working, the end would be rapid. Unfortunately, it was, but the treatment did give me a little more time with him and time to accept (as well as one can) that he had led a happy life, was much loved, and that it was time to let him go. Just really bad timing for me. Enjoy your little darling while you can.
