So I went for a walk...

Monday, January 13, 2014

A couple weeks ago, I fell forward in my office (big klutz) and although I thought I was healing apparently I really tweaked my hip, which keeps stiffening up if I sit for more than a few minutes. Getting old is really NOT for sissies. I just turned 67. So I need to workout, but it hurts. I decided that walking would be best and I live only a mile for the Pacific Ocean... So I took my dogs and went to the beach. North Little River Beach to be more specific...

It was NOT a lovely day... foggy, cold... but I'm used to that.
I made it down the stairs that were clearly not made for old ladies with sore hips, even my little dogs had a hard time with the angle. However, my Fitbit didn't notice the elevation change at all.
Which way to go...

We picked the Near Beach Trail since I wanted to walk near the surf.

I haven't visited this beach for many, many years. Probably around 40 years, so I was pretty surprised to find...

I had no idea that it was snowy plover nesting season, nor that large sections of the dunes are closed for restoration. This was the maze that led to the beach...

I love the beach and I am thankful for all the work that is being done to restore and preserve it. Eventually, I met some snowy plovers... By now I was getting tired and decided to try to find my way back. But alas, I was lost. We walked quit a long way before I realized that I had missed the entrance to the maze. Since we had walked beyond the restoration postings we went cross country over the dunes to find our way back (it was a little scary) and my little dogs were running out of gas. I had to carry Buttercup for awhile, but we made it!

By the time we got back to the car all four of us were pretty tired, but all the stiffness was gone from my hip and I plan to do it again today Although I will try to skip the getting lost part and will try to enjoy the ocean more. After I returned I found out we were having record breaking waves for this area and I missed them due to the fog!!!

Walking in the dunes is hard work! I am glad it did help your hip though. Walking is often the best exercise, I am convinced of it. :)

I am so envious ... would love to walk the beach here, but it is covered with dangerous ice dunes and the temp is a little warmer than normal (47) which only makes them even more treacherous.
Instead I am heading to my Mom's retirement center to join her in their Silver sneakers probram. Hope the hip heals up quickly ...
