Race Recap - Cancer Crush 5k benefiting Alex's Lemonade Stand

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

I had a quick trip down to Columbus ths weekend for this 5K. A friend of mine has started his own business and they were one of the sponsors of the race. My parents, sister, and some friends came from Cincinnati. We had a great time at my friend's house Friday night - beautiful night outside with a firepit. Unfortuantely not so good from a food perspective - I'm calling my Whole 30 experiment Whole 30 Lite - haven't been all that strict about it. I'll be attempting the strict Whole 30 experiment again in the future, but right now it's focusing on cutting out as much as I can.

Anyway - the race! It was Saturday morning, which dawned as a beautiful day. The race was at a park on Ohio State's campus that has a 1 mile loop and we did 3 loops to complete. It was pretty warm at the start, so I told myelf to focus on trying to keep a steady pace and not go too crazy. Beautiful blue skies though. I started a little fast at the start to get ahead of the walkers but then slowed down to my normal pace after the first 1/4 mile. Ran through the 1.25 miles but then I had to slow down and walk a little bit. Walked until the 1/2 mile marker, at which point I ran again. At the 2.25 mile mark I came across my sister and a friend, and I needed to catch my breath, so I walked again to 2.50 with them, then took off at a run to finish. As I was coming up to the end I could see the clock (clearly - thank you Lasik!) and could see I was coming up on 39 min. I really wanted to beat my best time (39:20) so I threw on the afterburners and crossed the finish line at a good clip. I ended with a chip time of 38:55. :D So happy about that.

Now, I would like to have said "Hey, I ran the whole thing". But I didn't and by taking the breaks that I did I was able to run the majority and not burn out with a full mile left. So my goal for my next 5k is to run the whole whole thing (and beat my time of course ;) ).

I hope everyone is doing well and making it through August. Fall is my favorite time of year and I can't wait for it to get here!

Awesome job with the race! You should be incredibly proud of yourself. And I think it's great that you're being realistic with Whole 30. It's hard to find the line between a little indulgence and totally pigging out sometimes, but I think it's an important lesson to learn. It's great that it opened your eyes a bit to foods that you might cut back on and foods that you might add. Keep up the good work!
