Meditation and Yoga in the Park - Involvement Challenge Blog

Tuesday, January 06, 2015

I joined the Involvement Challenge on the San Antonio Spark team for January. Basically it is a challenge to get us more involved in the team via greeting members, posting on pages, posting on threads, etc. One of the requirements is a weekly blog about a work out, along with a picture of ourselves during the work out.

My daughter-in-law is NOT a yoga instructor, but she finds a lot of peace and flexibility through very simple (and fairly easy) yoga moves and meditation. I find the same to be true for me. Yoga has made this arthritic granny a lot more able to function and move. The meditation centers me in a very spiritual way. Becca is just a regular person like you and me, but she wanted to share her love for yoga and meditation with others and get more regular people like us out of our comfort zones in an outdoor, public environment. She's a lot like me in this; I think getting out of our comfort zones frees us so much!

We meet at Comanche Lookout Park (Semmes Library) on Judson at Nacogdoches on Sundays (weather permitting) at 10:30. Becca leads us in 10 to 15 minutes of sun salutations and simple yoga moves, then we have 20 minutes of meditation followed by more very simple yoga. Some of us have taken to walking a mile on the trails afterwards. All are welcome to join us in whatever capacity they wish. If you are in the San Antonio area, bring a mat and join us for loosely structured mental and physical fitness, as well as the fellowship of some pretty nice folks.

From the parking lot, facing the playground, take the trail on the right just a little ways and you will see a covered outdoor "classroom". Drop your mat and join in. Hope to see you there. If you are on facebook, you can join the group there, called Bex Meditation in the Park, for updates and info:

The page needs an update, as it still lists McAllister Park as our meet up location, instead of Comanche Lookout. I'll have to mention this to Becca. emoticon

This Sunday's meet up info is listed in on this event page:

If you are hesitant because you are heavy, older, inflexible, never did yoga, etc...let me reassure you. I started doing this at 272 pounds on a 4'10 frame. That's about 310- 325 pounds on the average height woman. I have rheumatoid and osteo arthritis, fibromyalgia, COPD, heart problems, knee and foot problems, and lupus. I was highly inflexible, rigid, stiff, and in so much pain. Simple yoga moves have made a huge difference in my life, along with the weight loss of 70+ pounds since surgery. I'm still a "fat", middle-aged woman, but guess what? I'm out living and doing. You have no excuse. If you are in the area, join us.

Here's a few pictures of Becca on Sunday doing meditation and showing us a pose we might try to master down the line that is too difficult for most of us yet (we do what is possible and doable at our level for now). The last picture is me holding a pose I couldn't do four months ago. Baby steps, ya'll. This picture of me fulfills this week's work out picture requirement. Please note the sweater I am wearing (layers, it was cold!) is hanging off of me. It fit me perfectly last winter - Yay! I was also wearing two pairs of pants and two pairs of socks. We are weather wimps in South Texas when it gets cold! I have a couple pictures of HEIDIJUNEBUG doing her yoga moves as well, but since she is in the Involvement Challenge also, I will let her post them in her blog. emoticon

Hope to see some San Antonio Spark team folks next Sunday. Never give up, never give in. As always, I love you all!

emoticon awesome. I'd love to do it, but I go to church on Sunday's at 10:45.
I'm sure there will be something else the group will do another time. I'll look into the challenge and see if it's something that I can be consistent with.

    Keep up the emoticon work!

This is great! I'll definitely drop in on ya if I happen to be in SA on an upcoming weekend... (Nothing planned, but if nothing else I'll dedicate my Sun yoga practice to y'all ;-)
It's funny, I've dabbled in yoga for almost 40 yrs w/out any particular proficiency, but for the New Year I've started participating in a Big Gals Yoga challenge on Instagram - actually POSTING PUBLIC PHOTOS!?! Unprecedented for this non-selfie fan!!!
I go by the same alias there that I do here & everywhere else in cyberspace if you'd like to check it out - very inspiring!

Yeah! This seems like such a great time. Great way to wake up and relax in the morning. Unfortunately, my worship service is at 9, so I can't make it. It does give me the idea to do something similar on my own back patio though. Love the idea. and yeah... this makes you want spring here... thankfully our winter is short and sweet down here.
