Clean eating (not easy but it is doable)

Saturday, March 07, 2015

I jumped back on the fitness bandwagon in August, and I am so proud that I have pretty much stayed on it.

It helps having to meet with a personal trainer once a month to be weighed and have body fat percentage measured along with other key measurements! That alone has kept me motivated to go to the gym 3-4 times a week for strength training and cardio.

But I heard a dude on The Biggest Losr say "you can't out-train a bad diet", and I've finally owned my downfall. I have to get a handle on the nutrition piece; otherwise, I'm just sabotaging all my hard work in the gym.

I have to own the fact that I have a sweet tooth. I love candy and cookies and cake and pie and brownies. Love, love, love. I had no trouble giving up soft drinks (though I easily drank 2 liters of Pepsi a day, every day!). However....living in a candy-free, cookie-free, cake-free, pie-free, brownie-free world is my Waterloo, my Achilles Heel, my downfall. I can go a few weeks, maybe even a month without....then all of a sudden, I have to have it. So I eat one piece, then another, then another..till it's all gone. And I want more!

Last week was like that for me. I bought 2 bags of Starburst Fruit Chews, and they barely lasted two days.

But that was last week. This is today. Today there are no sweets in my house. I just cooked collards, cabbage and quinoia. They're all measured out and packed in ZipLoc bags and in the freezer waiting for some healthy meals next week. I also cooked some ground turkey (with onions, garlic and mushrooms) for a healthy meat to go with my healthy veggies. And I've measured out and bagged up baby carrots and grapes for snacks. To round this out I have low fat cottage cheese and low fat plain Greek yogurt.

And I feel good! Clean eating, healthy eating...with foods I love. It's taken me some time to find foods that I enjoy eating that are good for me, but I hung in there.

I have one more month with my personal trainer, and I feel completely capable of going it alone. I've gotten the "gym habit", and it's in my bones now.

I'm losing pounds slowly, and inches slowly...but the key word in the sentence is"LOSING"! I'm headed in the right direction on this journey, and I'm in no hurry to reach my destination.

Glad to see you back! I've been away from spark people for a while. It's so easy to fall off the weight loss wagon and be back on the road I was on before. I'm glad to see you are moving forward in a positive direction with food and exercise. Praying for you on this incredibly difficult, yet rewarding journey! emoticon
