Returning to Leadership - I'm Baaack! (Things I've learned)

Wednesday, July 01, 2015

I resigned as a leader from my beloved San Antonio Spark Team at the first of the year. I needed a break after 5 years. I had my WLS at the end of July 2014 and it was just time to focus more on ME and MY journey. I'm at 82 pounds lost, by the way. emoticon

I needed a break from coming up with challenges, being responsible for greeting new members and making them feel welcome, and from feeling guilty if I didn't check in on the team daily. I'm so grateful to SBEAR5, UNSTOPPABLEJEN, and HEIDIJUNEBUG for the amazing job they've always done as leaders and that they continue to do and for understanding that I needed to break away for awhile. But I learned something in my 6 months away.

1. I missed the challenges, being a part of the development process and feeling good when a challenge was successful. Sarah, Jen, and Heidi came up with really great ones so far this year, but I did feel the pangs of not having a role beyond challenge participant. Control Freak, much? No, I like to think it's more wanting to be a part of the creative process WITH the other leaders. I did create some facebook physical challenge events, but as a whole they were kind of lonely endeavors without co-leaders.

2. I need the responsibility of being accountable to the team through regularly posting, greeting new members, coming up with questions, queries, and making general topics of interest. I have to stay involved so I don't become lazy.

3. I missed planning meet ups. One of the things that make us unique from many other local/regional/city teams is how close so many of us are in real life because of meet ups, get togethers, in person challenges and walks together. Some of us have become very close personal friends rather than online acquaintances.

4. I MISSED YOU! I got so lazy about checking your status updates, reading your blogs, making comments. Not just on my local team, but on all my teams where I've formed friendships and come to care about some very special folks. I am going to get back to the business of being a better spark friend!

5. I missed being a leader. PERIOD. Not to sound vain, but I was born to encourage others. I know this. I've always been someone who finds worth and value in every person and is good at pointing out to others just how amazing they are. I love being a motivator and helping others to become empowered. It's just who I am. It's important to know where your strengths are. This isn't to say I'm bossy (though some in my family might argue that!), but I do like to help guide and lead. I learn so much from others and enjoy learning. I think that is why it is important to have a leadership TEAM. We each bring something and work off of one another well.

So what's going on now? Well, we are taking a summer hiatus from challenges, but we are going to have one humdinger of a back to school, back to the normalcy, back to our own physical well being kind of challenge in September. Can't wait to get with the other ladies and get this planned out. I'm sure they are bursting with great ideas. I haven't got a single one at the moment. emoticon I'm sure this will change once we are all brainstorming and I hear what they have in mind.

I have a July and August challenge going on over in the facebook realm that is open to the public, if anyone wants something fun to fill your summer time fitness needs in a fun and friendly manner. It's called Sizzling Summer Fitness Festival, and it covers some physical challenges anyone at any level of fitness can do, as well as some positive mental health and self esteem challenges. Feel free to join in at

If the link doesn't work, you can find it by searching facebook by the challenge name.

That's about it for now. I just accepted the invitation to rejoin leadership. Give me a few days to get acclimated and I'll do my best to re-earn and live up to the role.

As always, I love you all!
