Traveling and healthy eating.

Sunday, April 10, 2016

I was traveling this weekend, which wreaked havoc on my healthy eating. Had anyone been with me I probably would have been far more motivated to plan options that didn't come from a drive thru window. Unfortunately, I was alone and went with simplicity.

I was camping, but do to unseasonably cold temperatures (30 degrees...in April...in the South!) and 20 mph winds I wasn't at liberty to build a campfire and cook delicious foods as I normally would. That's why I opted to eat out far more than I should. Fact: nothing good comes from a drive thru window. True I could have made salad, sandwiches, or dozens of other options without a campfire, but it was almost as if I saw it as an opportunity to eat badly. What it comes down to is that I was faced with temptation, and gave in without a second thought to how many steps in reverse I was taking.

What have I learned from this experience that will assist me as I continue my journey? I have to plan meals and snacks ahead when I'm traveling. Also, if I'm camping I need to take into consideration what the weather will be like. If there is going to be a ban on burning, then I will know ahead of time that cooking over an open fire will not be an option and I will be prepared.

I am extremely routine, so when my routine gets out of alignment it really causes an issue. What's done is done, and it is time to forgive myself and continue my journey. I will use this past weekend as a learning tool so I can be better prepared in the future.

Trying to eat healthy while traveling can a total pain in the backside! I will usually try to cut back on carbs to help out. For instance, if I were to get Subway, I usually get a foot long. but what I'll do is transfer everything from the bigger half (there's always a bigger half!) to the smaller half, reducing the bread by at least 50% while still getting the rest of the sandwich filling.

Good for you! When I was traveling a lot I found it really difficult to eat healthy - even when I planned ahead. HAVING a plan is half the battle, though. Way to go on figuring out how to approach things differently NEXT time!

Planning is key for sure. It is hard to be flexible when there are limited choices. Stay strong.
