Musings on being an old college student, and my exercise plan for the next month

I am finally a Senior in college, at the ripe old age of 38!
I have a few more semester's because of the way the courses are offered but I'm stoked to feel like I have made it over the hump and can see an accomplishment coming!
I had an amazing experience just a couple of weeks ago, that I am also proud to have completed. I am a Public Health major and I signed up for a week long global health course on malnutrition and world hunger. It was an experience that took me out of my comfort zone completely. The course was off campus at a place called Servants of Faith and Technology (SIFAT). Which has dormitories for us to sleep in and 176 acre farm to learn about food preservation, building water pumps and many other technologies that can help developing countries. I learned a great deal, I laughed with folks, who were mostly younger than me or didn't speak English, I also cried a few times and SWEAT! Boy did I SWEAT!

I had really been exercising for about a month prior to leaving for SIFAT because I wanted to try and lose a few pounds and maybe be used to the sweating on hot days. But since most of the people were young 20 somethings I still felt ill equipped, old and of course I was the largest of the group. I was able to lose 10lbs before I went, but I still felt so huge the entire time I was there, not to mention trying to stay covered during shower times and getting dressed in a room full of about 20 women.

The time at SIFAT has helped me get some focus on my career and that I really want to try and help out those that live in our rural counties here in Alabama. It helped pull me out of my shell too, I met some amazing people and created a community I never could have imagined. But it has also motivated me to focus on my health and try and do more of our own gardening and buying locally.

I start my fall semester tomorrow and I am taking 5 courses, so it is going to be busy with having my own kids and household to take care of, but I created a month long exercise calendar, so that I don't have to think about what should I do today. I can just look on the calendar and exercise. I'm trying out the Chalean extreme with a combination of Cize and Rockin' Body cardio exercises. The Chalean extreme focuses on weight training, so hopefully I will get a good combination of both cardio and strength. The weight training is 5 days a week with the cardio everyday. I'm trying to counteract all the sitting I do in class and studying at home, by getting in some exercise everyday.

As you can see my arms need the toning.
And of course walking the dogs is always a must do! Cause I love it when they are happy!

    Wow, impressive to you both and Pickie98!

    I went back at age 28, realized we were expecting, and doubled my courseload from part time to fulltime. I got a lot of grief about it, but, I'm like, I'd rather do this in 2 1/2 years, than 8 (yes, I compared my options). The time was passing whether I was working toward my goal or not, so, might as well do it. And the youngest doesn't even remember me being in college, or the two jobs I was working at the time.

    I was 41 years old when I went back to school full-time. I worked three jobs, raised my daughter going through a divorce and having two major surgeries during this, along with being on crutches for four months. I got my Bachelor's Degree with honors at age 45 and am proud of it. I do not know how I did it. but I just took it a single day at a time.
    I did lose SOME weight at the time, but I think it was from lugging that backpack for 16 credit hours all around the campuses. You can do this!!

    All that you learned was more important than your age and size! You can bring your understanding of the feelings about those "issues" with you and help others feel comfortable enough to do well in their lives.
