Happy New Year! Getting ready to commit to the first 5% Weight Loss Challenge of 2017 - the Winter 5% Weight Loss Challenge!

My word for the year is "COMMITMENT". I don't "do" resolutions since I never met a resolution I ever kept. Several years ago I decided to have a "Word for the Year" because I found applying one word to every aspect of my life was more motivating than a list of resolutions. Last year's word, "Consistency" helped me reach many small goals. This year's word will cement last year's word!

Part of participating in the seasonal challenges is to post two of our commitments (diet and exercise), and like every good goal, the commitment has to be S.M.A.R.T. A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely, so let's look at my commitment to SMART goals for a food plan and for exercise.

My food plan will incorporate deciding to purchase and eat foods that are Non-GMO, medium to low (preferably low) sugar, whole, natural, organic and gluten-free when available and affordable, and nutrient dense. Spark People's Nutrition Tracker makes it easy for me to achieve my daily calorie/carb/protein/fat and fiber requirements, and serves as a guide toward planning a balanced daily food plan. One of the most important features of any food plan is balance, and it's the balance that will bring success.

Likewise, a balanced exercise program (especially when it's varied enough), will help you to succeed. I worked out my exercise routine to include weight training and cardio, with a goal of a minimum of 30 minutes daily, 6 days a week. I set a low goal because it will be easier to extend those 30 minutes into a lengthier workout! Attitude is everything when it comes to reaching goals, and my new Fitbit Charge 2 comes with a reminder to take at least 250 steps every hour for (in my case) 12 hours. Every little motivator helps!

Setting SMART goals and committing to them for the Winter Challenge gives me a good chance to keep these habits for many seasons to come!
