Okay before i get started with the subject of this blog I have to tell you about today.
Wow! First I have to say I am a sneaky Mimi, Memo, and GaGa!Each family of my grandkids call me something different. I love getting things for my grandkids for Easter! I do not want to get them baskets as that is something for their parents to do. So I got some cute Easter sacks and filled them with some goodies. Of course some of it was the traditional candy LOL. Boy are their Moms (my daughters) going to kill me! But they are staying at my house so...
I snuck everything into the house right under their noses and they had no clue. LOL
They helped me bring the groceries in and helped put them away and they never saw the bag with the goodies in it.
Not a very good picture but that is the bag I normally carry my extra tanks of oxygen in so they never even suspected.
Okay now on to the topic I wanted to talk about. I want to talk about goals setting. I know we hear a lot about setting goals but goals cause happiness. How you ask? Well goal setting gives us a sense of control in our lives. Control of our lives causes happiness so therefore goals cause happiness. Goals also give you the opportunity to create a new future for yourself.
Do you have your ultimate goal? Mine is to live a long happy life with hubby. Once you have decided what your ultimate goal is then it is time to break down your goal into smaller goals. My smaller goals were to get out of my wheelchair for good, walk 5 miles,lose at least 100 lbs, watch my grandchildren graduate and play with them in the park.Then I broke those goals down even further. My first week was simply walk from the car in the parking lot into the store without one of their electric chairs. My daughter used to always go in the store and bring me one of the electric chairs. That was week 1 by week 4 it was habit. So I dropped that goal and created a new one. I take one morning each week, sit down with my hot herbal tea and decide on what I need to do that week to get me to my next goal. Then the next week I sit down again with my herbal tea and decide what it is I need to do this week along with my goal from last week. Lets say on week 2 I want to add more fish to my diet. So I would still walk from car into walmart without an electric chair and plan 3 nights that week to have fish. Then on week 3 I did both of my new goals plus add 1. Lets say I want to eat 3 servings of vegetables a day. So it would now be...
1. walk from car into walmart without using an electric chair...
2. eating fish 3 times a week
3. eating 3 vegetables a day.
Now we do this again for week 4...
1. walk from car into walmart without using an electric chair
2. eating fish 3 times a week
3. eating 3 vegetables each day
4. eating 3 fruits each day.
Now on week 5 you no longer need to list the first goal on your list because it is now a healthy habit and no longer a goal. So celebrate! Reward yourself for achieving your first goal and making it a habit. Then when I sat down to decide on my healthy goal for the week I no longer need to list the first one as it should be automatic to walk to the store from my car. The experts say never to work on more than 7 things at a time. But using this method you will only be working on 4 things at a time but actually only adding 1 new goal a week. You will also be celebrating once a week for achieving your goals. Now if you do not achieve your goal one week just try again the next week. Never beat yourself up! We are only human! Humans are not perfect only God is perfect.
So to continue in week 5 we set the goal of exercising 15 minutes every day. Then something happens during the week and we do not accomplish that goal. Do not get upset and do not give up. Just brush it off and it becomes week 6 goal. Your goals are always revolving and are not set in stone. But they need to be something you are passionate about and something that will get you to your ultimate goal. Ask yourself will this help me achieve my ultimate goal? If not then do not do it.
The reason for sitting down once a week and deciding on your goals for the week is because as we meet our goals and they become habits our needs and desires will change. So then we need to sit down when we can have some peaceful quiet time each week and reflect on what we really want and how we are going to get it. Set new goals and put them into action.
I actually created a "Dream" board but I should have called it my "GOAL" board. I have goals I want to accomplish on there and some poems to help motivate me. As i accomplish a goal on my board I add a glittery star sticker to that picture. I always leave my goals on the board even after I have met them so that I have a constant reminder of how far I have come towards my ultimate goal. At the bottom of my board is a ruler with my weight when I started my journey all the way to the weight I want to finally be. As I lose weight I have a decorative push pin that I move on the ruler to that new weight. I have this hanging on the wall in our hall. I see it several times a day and it always makes me smile and gives me a sense of accomplishment. This causes a release of dopamine in the brain which is the feel good hormone which causes me to work harder to meet my goal that day. It is those constant visual reminders that help us work towards our ultimate goals.
I was using a spreadsheet with 7 healthy habits to work on each week and would only take one off after I had successfully done it for 1 month. It was too hard to keep up with that many things at a time. That is why I went to one new one each week to add to what I was already doing. It has been awesome. I do drink 8-10 glasses every day without even thinking about it. I eat fish at least 3 times a week and am now eating whole grains. I am also exercising at least 2 hours every day. It is broken up as I cannot do all that at one time but it adds up quickly. These things have become healthy habits and I no longer have to think about them I just do them as part of my normal routine.
Nothing worth having is going to come easy but with a little work and determination we can make it happen! I do know that this is not a one size fits all plan but it works for me and I thought I would share it because it might just work for you as well.
If I can help just one person by sharing my journey and my goals then it all is worthwhile. That in itself keeps me motivated to succeed.
