Challenges of a Small Office

As anyone who has a desk job knows, it's really hard to get your steps in at work. I sometimes envy people with more active jobs who get to move and get some exercise in while at work. There are lots of articles about how to get in more steps during the day, particularly if you work in an office. One of my favorite bits of advice is to get up and go to someone's office instead of sending an email or calling them on the phone. That would work in a larger office, but I work in an office with only ten people. The entire perimeter of our office is only 40 steps, so while I do get up and walk to someone's office instead of sending an email, it doesn't rack up many extra steps during the day.
One creative solution I've come up with is to go on a bit of a trek once or twice a day when I need to use the restroom. I work in a complex of three buildings in a row with suites rented out to various small businesses. Our suite is at the very end of the first building and it's about 1,000 steps roundtrip to walk to the restroom in the lobby of the third building. This works when my day isn't crazy and I can slip away for about fifteen minutes, and when the weather is decent. The buildings aren't connected, so you have to go outside in between each building, so it's a different story when the temperatures are in the single digits or it's snowing. But I try to get those walks in when I can, even during the winter months. I'm starting to notice the days getting longer, so soon I'll be able to get short walks in after I get home from work. I am so looking forward to spring!
