Captains Log 062918
Welcome Stars! As we prepare for takeoff I wanted to take a moment and remind you that every journey has a beginning but not all journeys have an end. Our journey is one such journey as it will be a lifelong way of life. By making this lifelong then you are setting yourself up for success. For example, if you look at a diet and why they never seem to work, they imply short term and therefore end. Just like the “Lose 10 lbs in 7 days” diet. You eat only certain things for 7 days, what then? You may or may not lose 10 pounds but what happens next? The diet is over so you go back to normal way of life and the weight comes right back. So, we have to change our way of thinking. This journey is just the beginning of greater things to come.
*****Our first destination is Mauritius. Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation, is known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs. The mountainous interior includes Black River Gorges National Park, with rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and wildlife like the flying fox. Capital Port Louis has sites such as the Champs de Mars horse track, Eureka plantation house and 18th-century Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens. It is 10,928 miles. This will be quite a challenge for us. But we can do it!!
Our first LTGL is to drink water. We can do this! Try for 8 glasses a day unless your health does not allow. Then drink what your Doctor recommends. There are several different ways you can achieve this. Please see the initial post in the week 1 challenge thread for ideas.
*****Remember to weigh in before midnight, your time zone Saturday.
*****Please post your exercise and LTGL for every day. Even if you did not exercise, post a 0. As long as you post for every day, you will earn the Shining Star badge. Our badges are not issued as competition against one another but as incentive to help motivate you.
*****For those of you that participated with the practice week, your exercise and LTGL must be entered before midnight tonight. Your practice week badges will be posted tomorrow in the Bright Stars Lounge.
*****For those of you interested in having a Starbuddy. Please let us know in the Stars Sharing the Light thread before Monday July 2. I will be sending out sparkmessages to each of you that want to participate on Monday.
*****Each week we will have a new mindful exercise to practice. Last week we had the Mindful Pause. How did you do with this? These will also be posted in the “Star Inspirations” thread. In the Introduce Yourself Forum.
Our Mindful exercise this week is one we did last challenge but is also a wonderful coping technique. It is often used for anxiety, depression and anger. It can also be used to help curb your cravings. It is called 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding. First take a few slow deep breaths
1. Notice five things that you can see.
Look around you and bring your attention to five things that you can see. Pick something that you don’t normally notice, like a shadow or a small crack in the concrete.
2. Notice four things that you can feel.
Bring awareness to four things that you are currently feeling, like the texture of your pants, the feeling of the breeze on your skin, or the smooth surface of a table you are resting your hands on.
3. Notice three things you can hear.
Take a moment to listen, and note three things that you hear in the background. This can be the chirp of a bird, the hum of the refrigerator, or the faint sounds of traffic from a nearby road.
4. Notice two things you can smell.
Bring your awareness to smells that you usually filter out, whether they’re pleasant or unpleasant. Perhaps the breeze is carrying a whiff of pine trees if you’re outside, or the smell of a fast food restaurant across the street.
Now normally the final step is to notice 1 thing you can taste. But for the sake of our challenge our final step will be.
5. Name 1 thing good about yourself.
Take a moment and think of something good about yourself. It can be as simple as you make a good cup of coffee, you are a good organizer, or you are good at your job. Each time you use this mindful exercise this week try to think of something different that you feel is good about you.
*****FEATURE OF THE WEEK*****
Our feature thread this week is the thread…To Boldly Go. This thread is for daily personal affirmations or goals. This is optional. It is your choice whether or not to participate. It is merely a way for you to keep yourself accountable. You can either use the sample post with dates or you can simple post “Today I am going to….” Your daily affirmation or goal could be anything you want such as making a menu, cleaning out the refrigerator or wash laundry.
***** If you feel like you are becoming overwhelmed, please reach out to us either by talking to us in the Galaxy Room or by sparkmail. Just remember that the only requirements for you to be an active part of the challenge are filling out your pre-flight checklist, recording your challenge exercises, LTGL and your weight chart each week. Everything else is just there to help you if you want it. Above all else remember that we are not in a competition against each other. We are here to support one another on our journeys to better health.
****Lets get this challenge started! We can do this!! Lets leave a stardust trail behind us!
Our team motto is “No Star Left Behind”.
