Hiking: Good for the body and mind

Having just returned from a short 3 day backpacking trip, I asked myself why I like hiking so much. Whether it's day hikes or 3-7 day backpacking trips, I always enjoy myself, even through heat, rain, snow, mud, pain, soreness, blisters, tiredness, and poor trail guide books. I enjoy spending the night out in the middle of nowhere, listening to the owls, coyotes, whippoorwills, and bugs. Yes, sometimes rain, thunder, and howling wind. But I'm at peace there. My body hurts, I don't sleep well, and sometimes every little activity wants to turn into a pain in the butt. But, I'm at peace. Nothing soothes my mind like walking through the woods with the only thought being getting to the next waypoint. Hopefully without losing the trail LOL. I say that I hike for my health, and while I think it's great for the body, the real benefit is to my mind. I forget about all my problems, big and small, and the annoyances that sometimes just seem to build on one another, and it's like getting a fresh start on my sanity. BTW, I lost 2 lbs by carrying a pack 37 miles LOL. So that's why I hike, I have to reboot and recharge my mind. It helps to keep me sane as I put in another 7 and a half years to retirement. And then I'll do it more!
