Hiking: Good for the body and mind

Monday, October 08, 2018

Having just returned from a short 3 day backpacking trip, I asked myself why I like hiking so much. Whether it's day hikes or 3-7 day backpacking trips, I always enjoy myself, even through heat, rain, snow, mud, pain, soreness, blisters, tiredness, and poor trail guide books. I enjoy spending the night out in the middle of nowhere, listening to the owls, coyotes, whippoorwills, and bugs. Yes, sometimes rain, thunder, and howling wind. But I'm at peace there. My body hurts, I don't sleep well, and sometimes every little activity wants to turn into a pain in the butt. But, I'm at peace. Nothing soothes my mind like walking through the woods with the only thought being getting to the next waypoint. Hopefully without losing the trail LOL. I say that I hike for my health, and while I think it's great for the body, the real benefit is to my mind. I forget about all my problems, big and small, and the annoyances that sometimes just seem to build on one another, and it's like getting a fresh start on my sanity. BTW, I lost 2 lbs by carrying a pack 37 miles LOL. So that's why I hike, I have to reboot and recharge my mind. It helps to keep me sane as I put in another 7 and a half years to retirement. And then I'll do it more!

Absolutely gorgeous wow! I adore hiking also, although at this point I'm down to a crawl so it's really just a walk through the woods. It's the best soul food available to be in amongst the creations of God and Mother Nature. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures. Have a great day!

You are so right about the benefits of hiking---whether the walking, changing routines, being in nature, rebooting/recharging. Whatever the why/how is, great being out in nature.

Wow, what a nice way to spend your time. I belonged to a hiking club when I lived in CA, now I am a farmer's wife enjoying life in the country, never get must chance to head for the mountains as I am caring for the critters and tending the garden which is also a nice way to spend my time.

But, like you, I love the tranquility of being in nature! Thanks for sharing!! emoticon

I too love to hike. There's nothing better than getting back to nature to clear the mind. Have to ever been to Hocking Hills in Ohio? Beautiful scenery. Easy hikes and more challenging ones

I enjoy hiking too but not such long distances. We used to do some longer hikes but my arthritis doesn't cooperate any more. Indian Kitchen at Lusk Creek Canyon is a nice place to hike too.
