Looking back

Thursday, June 06, 2019

This time last year I was setting off on a cruise to Iceland - a truly wonderful 12 days but with a sting in the tail. I had a fall which left me with a hip and knee injury which took until January this year before I could walk without crutches for any distance. I got so unfit in that period and my weight just crept up and up, despite taking part in 10 week challenges.
Last year was eventful in other ways too. My youngest son, Will, has bipolar and at a very low point in March of last year took a massive overdose which has left him partially sighted and so I have been travelling up and down to see and help him (a 6 hour round trip) on a monthly basis and he and his partner have had a baby. Little Harmony is now 9 months old and is such a smiley, happy baby.
Because of my injuries I wasn't able to get out in the garden until recently with the result the weeds a month ago were almost waist high. I have been getting out on an almost daily basis and it is now beginning to look a lot better, although rather empty.

The lettuce in the raised bed are making progress and I hope to get some spinach, tomatoes, cucumber and squash planted.

We've got a couple of apple trees, crabapple trees and a plum tree as well as summer and autumn raspberries.
Apart from gardening, my other fitness plan is to get to the gym for water aerobics and swimming 2 to 3 times a week as well as keeping up with the housework. Motivation and perseverence are going to be needed in the next few months.

Rosa, it's wonderful to hear from you! I'm so sorry that you've had such a rough year and problems with your hip and knee. Your garden is looking really good; so glad that you are able to get back to some of the activities that you enjoy like gardening. Hope you enjoy the water aerobics as well.

It's hard to believe that Harmony is 9 months old!

If your schedule permits, it would be wonderful to have you on the Summer*Term team. It's pretty laid back in the summer.

It is lovely to hear from you Rosa and I am so pleased that your are on the mend and able to get into the garden again.
It takes a while to get things back in order and so satisfying when you do.
Your garden looks lovely and your plans for it will all slowly come together. I has taken me about 18 months to get the garden back in order, you are doing a great job not just in the garden but in caring for yourself as well.

Rosa, I'm so glad you're finally doing better and are able to get back to doing some of the things you enjoy. I had back surgery 3 weeks ago after 3 long years of doctors doing numerous tests, scans, and even pelvic surgery to try and find out why I was loosing the ability to walk and was in constant agonizing pain. Now I'm in the beginning of the 6 month recovery period, the first 3 months I can't do any twisting or bending of my back or lift over 10 pounds and am walking with a walker. This past week I've been dealing with percocet withdrawl too, which hasn't helped things much, but I think the worst of that is over and hope to be feeling better soon.
My garden also is getting so overgrown it makes me cringe to look at it. Our house is on a little over an acre so there is a lot of yard work and my husband has a bad back also and can't keep up with it all. We decided before my surgery that he would do as much as he could and we wouldn't worry about what didn't get done. We live in the country without any close neighbors so it isn't like anyone will complain but it still is frustrating to feel like your yard is turning into a jungle and there isn't anything you can do about it. Reading your story gives me hope that things will eventually get back to normal for me too and I'll be able to once again work in my yard and do the other things I enjoy too.

Rosa, glad you are doing so much better after such a tough time. It sounds like you are moving into a better place. Healing the body takes a lot of energy, which leaves little for healthy efforts (speaking from my own experiences). I hope you enjoy your garden and gardening is good exercise for those who enjoy it.

    Have a fun summer!

It is sooo good to hear from you, Rosa!! ::hugs:: I'm sorry about your run of bad luck, to your hip and knee. I only know too well how incapacitated it feels when the leg, ankle is broken, so I'm thrilled you'll be able to put that behind you and you can move FORWARD. Summer*Term started Saturday, but we're still 'trickling' in if you're planning on any SP time with us - just let me know. It's such a blessing to hear about Harmony!! Your garden sounds and looks lovely. xoxoxo Annie
