Subsidized Housing

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

I live in subsidized housing. Don't get me wrong. I do appreciate having a roof over my head, heat, lights, etc. But there are drawbacks.

First is the problem with the cigarette smoke that seems to seep through the walls from one unit to another. Not easy for an asthmatic! And the smell of Marijuana that hangs around the hallways is nauseating.

When things break or go wrong, it can seem to take a long time for it to be fixed. Most recently, the entry-phone system to the building is down. This means there is no way to buzz anyone into the building so if someone comes to visit or a home care aid arrives, the resident has to physically go to the front door to let them in. This is very hard for people with mobility issues who cannot get around easily. Some of them may need the care aid to help administer medications correctly and on time. The system went down on Wednesday and the response from the manager was "We'll try to get to it as soon as we can" Still not fixed as of this evening. So what happens if one of those residents can't get down to the door to open it? Do they go without their meds? Does management even care?.

Something happened to the lock on the front door. No one's keys will turn. My key will go in the lock but will not turn. I am afraid to take my garbage out in case I can't find someone in the building who will let me in.... Other than that, I can just stay in my suite. But others may not have that option. Some have to go to work, or go to medical appointments, etc. Wonder how long it will take them to fix that?

We are still waiting for them to fix a problem that resulted from flooding over a year ago. They removed the carpeting at the time..... and about a month ago someone was in and removed the damaged drywall (took them long enough to do that!) but nothing else since.

Like I said, I am grateful to have a place to live, but I do wish I could afford to move. But I don't see that happening (sigh)
