How dare you?!

Saturday, January 25, 2020

It's been a stressful week, but mostly for good reasons including some celebrations: On Monday, I turned in my taxes, always a reason to rejoice. An even bigger reason - I FINALLY got my new kitchen installed! They finished on Thursday, and I've been unpacking and putting things away, which involves thousands of little decisions. I'm not a very decisive person, hence the stress.

I knew I needed a rest today when I found myself talking to a container of yoghurt.

I discovered that one of the containers had a crack in it and had leaked onto the shelf of my BRAND NEW fridge. I actually said out loud - "how dare you!" How dare it sneakily leak onto the shiny shelf, leaving a halo of yellowish goo?! I laughed at myself, then cleaned it up quickly. I mean, I always try to keep the fridge clean and tidy, but there's somehow more motivation to maintain things well when they're new.

I won't go into great detail about how I coped with the cooking situation over the past two months. Let's just say that, over the past few days, I've celebrated my LAST time washing dishes in the bathtub as well as the triumphant transfer of the food basket in from the balcony to the kitchen. I celebrated using my new oven for the first time today to heat up a frozen calzone-type thing for lunch. Maybe not the best choice for my weight loss plan but I wanted to do something simple - success!

Then, this evening I discovered that there's a light over the double sink! I asked for one, but it's so well-concealed that I thought the kitchen guys had left it out of the design. I can't believe I didn't notice it before! More celebrating!

Now I look forward to getting things guest-presentable. Things are shaping up nicely in both the living room and kitchen, but I have a ways to go. I may not accomplish all that I would like to before I leave in ten days for a month in the States. I aim for progress, not perfection, as the saying goes.

Almost forgot! Yesterday I celebrated my 20th anniversary as a contract teacher at the language school. We had a nice little gathering in one of the classrooms with my boss and colleagues; even a couple of former co-workers showed up.

The actual anniversary date was January 1. On January 10, I gave up my contract and now I'm a FREELANCER!

As things settle down somewhat, I should be back to weekly blogs. Remember to celebrate the joys, big and small. And, if you find yourself talking to a yoghurt container, it might be time for a break!
