Finding my wall

Thursday, October 22, 2020

This morning I popped my head into my husband's office and said I was heading out for a hike. When questioned I said I was going to do loops around the lake until I didn't want to go any further.

It was a very crisp morning, those great fall mornings with just a hint of chill in the air. The lake was calm and I just soaked it all in.

I kept a steady pace as I went along, taking in all the calmness of the forest.

I looped the lake a couple of times before I realized the weather was changing and the rain started to fall. Being under the canopy of the trees is wonderful, all the sounds of the rain falling and not getting wet.

As I started the fourth lap I stopped to assess, legs? Good. Lungs? Good. Feet? Good. Off I went. Half way around when I hit the 12KM mark my stomach spoke up.

"I'm hungry, where's the trail mix."
The trail mix was still sitting in the kitchen, I tried to ignore stomach. But then my head spoke up.

"I'm dizzy, can you please give stomach trail mix so it will settle down."

I sipped some water and tried to sway stomach and head that we're fine. They did not agree.

I stopped on the trail and announced to my body parts. We are 3KM from the car, you will hush, you will live and you will wait till we get home to eat.

Apparently my body parts are a lot like toddlers.

Still holding my pace I finished my hike and got back to my car. 15KM total.

In July I started running and hiking again. I was doing 2KM hikes and reminiscing about how I used to go for 10KM runs and accepted I'd likely never get there. Three months later I'm now training for my first half marathon race when real races can come back safely and my first half marathon hike with 1000 metre elevation gain that we'll be doing in the spring.

Getting stronger, getting healthier.
