Will I be able to maintain this once the world opens up?

Sunday, January 31, 2021

I've been maintaining for the first time ever and I have to admit, I'm nervous about being able to continue once we can all be social in person again...

I cook every day, and love that, but pre-Covid I was so socially active and it was something that kept me heavy. I know what to do, but I always have and that didn't stop the regaining in the past...

The one thing I think will make a difference is that I now exercise daily and truly feel the mental and physical benefits of it, and can't imagine giving that up.

Anyone else feeling like when the world gets back to "normal" the good habits you may have built over the last year might be seriously challenged?

I think it's normal to feel like that, the danger is to forget or become careless, that if we stop doing the disciplined habits that brought us to health, then we can easily lose the ground we worked so hard to get.

I'm encouraging you because I was that person who, about 10 years ago, got into the best physical fitness and healthy eating lifestyle of my life, and did well for about 5 years, then, I let some high-stress, long-term challenges in the family derail me, and little by little, stopped doing those things that made me healthy and fit. Ten years later, all weight gained back and fitness level worse than before, cuz, the older we get the quicker our health can degrade, it is even more important to stay nourished, strong and fit as possible. I finally got hit hard with arthritis in the knees, so I became more immobile, it was scary.

I've started my health journey back up in earnest, and I tell you, only one week in, I feel the benefits soaking back into my body, soul and mind... I am so thankful for how wonderfully we are made, that our bodies respond so quickly. BUT...it would have been better had I not suffered this (approx 5 year) set back. I do think to myself, where could I have been right now, had I not given up?

Sorry for the long post, but not sorry :) because I am so happy for your great accomplishments, and I encourage you, yes, there will be little deviations along the way, but never give up your consistent, persistent healthy habits, that brought you to this amazing place in your life, and have no fear! Be Blessed!

It's wonderful that you reached your goal and are now maintaining!

I've wondered, too, how much harder things will be when we go back to "normal". I think it's natural to fear whether we'll be able to maintain our healthy changes, because weight loss is HARD and - even though I'm not there yet - I know that maintenance is even harder.

But, here is a thought that is somewhat comforting for our weight efforts, even if it is disheartening from a public health perspective: the world isn't just going to flip a light switch and go back to normal. Once you are vaccinated, you might start seeing a few more people, and once others get vaccinated, the social circle of people that you see may expand. But the vaccine rollout will be a slow process, so the frequency of gatherings might increase slowly, giving you a chance to adapt and build healthy strategies for socializing while maintaining.

Also, with the new variants circulating and the fact that vaccines may not be as effective against them, I think we'll all be being cautious for a while. Some of our get-togethers might actually change in ways that make it easier to maintain our healthy habits. For example, we might start having more outdoor gatherings (such as going on a walk with a friend instead of meeting at a restaurant - extra physical activity and no extra calories!). At parties and bigger gatherings, people might avoid hosting pot-lucks and shared meals (to reduce spread of germs), and guests might even wear masks (which makes it harder to nibble on available snacks!).

WTG getting to maintaining. That’s awesome. I am still trying to get even close to maintaining BUT like you I’m nervous for when things open up again. I will really have to fight to keep my ME time.
